Mat’s Car of the Day: I loved the Kia PV5, but you should also consider a used EV9

I recently reviewed the Kia PV5 Passenger, and if you’re after a really spacious electric family car for not much money then it’s one you should seriously consider. Its van-based routes make it ludicrously practical, and you can have a top-spec version for just under £42,000.

That’s really good value for money, but at that price I’ve also found a used Kia EV9. It’s another hugely practical electric car, but it’s a bit posher than the PV5.

Used Kia EV9: the deal I’ve found

A new Kia EV9 starts from just under £67,000, so it’s a lot more expensive than the PV5 Passenger. You can save up to £9,800 if you buy one through Carwow, but I reckon the best savings are to be found on a used example.

I found this 2024 Kia EV9 with 36,600 miles on the clock, and it can be yours for £41,270. It’s a GT-Line S model, meaning you have heated leather seats, 360-degree cameras, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and twin 12.3-inch screens.

Three reasons to buy a used Kia EV9

There are a few reasons I’d consider this used Kia EV9 over the new PV5 Passenger. Here are three examples.

1. It feels more premium

The Kia PV5 Passenger is basically a van with rear seats, so it feels a bit utilitarian inside. All the plastics are hard and scratchy, but the EV9 is much posher. You get soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door tops, nice leather on the seats and a more interesting cabin design. It looks and feels premium enough to rival high-end German EVs like the Mercedes EQE SUV.

2. The range is better

I got 210 miles of real-world range from the Kia PV5 Passenger, which isn’t bad for a massive van like this. That said, the (slightly) more aerodynamic EV9 can realistically do around 250 miles depending on the model you go for.

3. It charges faster

You can charge the Kia PV5 passenger at up to 150kW at a DC rapid charger, taking you from 10-80% in 30 minutes. The EV9 can charge at a more impressive 210kW, so that same top up will only take 24 minutes.

Three reasons to buy the Kia PV5 Passenger instead

1. It’s more practical

If you want interior space, you really can’t beat the Kia PV5 Passenger. It’s got enough rear legroom to rival a limo, and the 1,330-litre boot is way bigger than any alternative. Even the Volkswagen ID Buzz “only” has 1,121 litres of boot space, and the EV9 can carry 828 litres.

2. It’s really easy to drive

Being based on a van, the PV5 Passenger has a brilliant driving position. You sit really high up, much higher than in an SUV, and the massive windows give you a brilliant view forward. It may be a big bus, but driving in town is surprisingly easy.

3. You get the full seven-year warranty

Kia’s seven-year warranty is one of the best out there, and even the 2024 EV9 I mentioned above is still covered for five years. But buying a new PV5 means you get the full seven years of coverage.
