Car changing is a big deal
A simple, low-cost car part is catching thousands of people out at MOT time. New data reveals just how common the issue is – and why many drivers are unknowingly at risk of failing their test.
More than 200,000 cars failed their MOT last year thanks to a simple, easy-to-fix fault, new research has revealed.
Faulty windscreen washer jets were responsible for 216,388 MOT failures in 2025, according to data from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). That equates to around 592 failures every single day.
The data suggests that many drivers are unaware that damaged or poorly functioning washer jets can result in an MOT failure. In fact, research by online marketplace eBay found that 26% of motorists didn’t know this issue could lead to a failure.

Windscreen washers play an important role in maintaining visibility on the road, particularly in poor weather conditions. However, the eBay study suggests they are often overlooked when it comes to routine maintenance.
More than one in 10 drivers (13%) admit they never check their washers at all, while 21% said they only check them when a MOT or service is already booked.

The data also highlights confusion around proper alignment. Incorrectly aimed washer jets caused a further 29,405 MOT failures in 2025, yet 58% of motorists were unaware this could lead to a fail. Nearly two-thirds (62%) admitted to not knowing how to align them correctly.
Abir Tewari, UK director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay, said small components such as washer jets often go unnoticed and can have a big impact.
“Small and simple parts like washer jets can go under the radar and motorists should routinely check them as part of their regular vehicle maintenance, especially before longer journeys and the annual MOT test.
“This vital part caused a significant number of failed MOTs last year, all of which are preventable with a low-cost, simple fix using parts sourced through eBay.”
Replacing a washer jet is cheap, with parts typically costing between £1 to £30, depending on the vehicle model, though most washer jets cost under £10.
A lack of confidence may also be contributing to the issue, with 69% of car owners saying they wouldn’t feel confident replacing washer nozzles themselves.
What to watch out for
Here are six things you can check to avoid an MOT failure related to your washer jets:
- Weak or no spray: If water isn’t reaching the windscreen properly, jets may be blocked or broken.
- Misaligned jets: Water should hit the centre of the windscreen, not overshoot or fall short.
- Blocked nozzles: Dirt and debris can clog jets, reducing effectiveness.
- Low washer fluid: An empty reservoir will also result in failure.
- Pump issues: If you can’t hear the pump when activating the car’s washers, there may be a fault.
- Leaks in the system: Check for fluid pooling under the car or around hoses.
Quick tip: Test your washer jets regularly – especially before your MOT – as fixing or replacing them is usually quick, simple and inexpensive.
How to fix a windscreen washer jet
- Test your washers: Turn them on to check the spray. Weak, uneven, or no spray often means a blockage or fault.
- Clear the nozzle: Locate the jets on the bonnet or near the windscreen. Use a pin, needle, or paperclip to gently remove dirt and debris, then test again.
- Check the washer pipes: Open the bonnet and find the hose connected to the jet. Disconnect it and use compressed air to blow through the nozzle end, then reconnect and retest.
- Soak stubborn blockages: If it’s still blocked, remove the jet by unclipping it. Soak it in white vinegar for a few hours, rinse, refit, and test.
- Inspect for leaks or damages: Check hoses and connectors for cracks or splits, especially Y or T joints (small plastic connectors that split the washer fluid line to feed multiple jets). Replace any damaged parts.
- Adjust the aim: Use a pin to carefully reposition the jet so the spray hits the centre of the windscreen.
