The Alfa Romeo Giulietta has always found homes with buyers thanks to its desirable Italian looks and brand heritage. Despite its qualities, however, it’s struggled to match the success of popular hatches such as the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf.
Alfa wants to get more Giuliettas on customers’ driveways so the brand has improved the 1.6-litre diesel engine that’s expected to be a big seller. If you like its Italian style, put the Alfa Romeo Giulietta in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.
New Alfa Romeo Giulietta diesel engine
Two major modifications have been made to the car to improve its performance and economy. Firstly, the company has fitted a new turbocharger that’s more willing to help the car accelerate and respond to throttle inputs.
Secondly, the brand has fitted the Giulietta with low-rolling resistance tyres. These units require less energy to turn and, thus, save fuel. Despite the increased rolling distance, the tyres are still designed to grip the road well, even in wet conditions.
Together, these alterations mean the new Giulietta 1.6 JTDM-2 returns a very impressive 74.3mpg (3.7mpg more than the outgoing unit) and emits just 99g/km of CO2. This last point, crucially, now means private buyers won’t pay any road tax until the system changes in 2017 and company car users pay just 17 per cent company car tax.
In addition to the enhanced efficiency, the engine is now more powerful. It makes 120hp – 15 more than the outgoing model – and accelerates to 62mph from rest in 10 seconds flat – 1.3 seconds faster than before. Top speed has increased to 121mph.
The Business Edition gets all the desirable kit buyers could need including a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, satellite navigation, DAB radio, front and rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers, alloy wheels and metallic paint.
Prices remain unchanged for the model so you can get a Business Edition Giulietta with the new 1.6-litre diesel for £19,080. Order books are now open.
