Car changing is a big deal
You could save up to £1,500 a year with easier, cheaper EV charging, thanks to thousands of new chargepoints and home upgrade support across the UK.
Charging your electric car just got easier – and cheaper – with thousands of new chargepoints across the UK and new home charging support that could save you up to £1,500 a year.
In the past year alone, over 17,000 new public EV chargepoints have been added – a 27% increase – making it more convenient to top up on the go. That means fewer detours, shorter waits, and more peace of mind for drivers worried about running out of charge.
But the real savings come at home.
A £25m government scheme is making cheap home charging more accessible, even for people without driveways. Thanks to cross-pavement cable technology, drivers can now safely connect their EVs to home power and enjoy domestic electricity rates as low as 2p per mile. That could mean up to £1,500 in annual savings compared to petrol or diesel.
And with the new electric car grant of up to £3,750 on the horizon, the savings start even before you hit the road.

Top tips to save even more on charging
We’ve put together a comprehensive guide on charging your electric car, but here are a few quick tips to help you save even more:
Charge at home overnight: Use off-peak electricity tariffs (usually between midnight and 7am) to get the cheapest rates.
Install a smart charger: These can automatically charge your car when electricity is cheapest and track your usage.
Use local authority schemes: Ask your council about cross-pavement charging or community charging hubs if you don’t have a driveway.
Use charging apps: Apps such as Zap-Map, Bonnet or Octopus Electroverse help you find the cheapest and fastest public chargepoints nearby. Carwow also has an EV charging stations map you can use.
Avoid peak pricing at rapid chargers: Unless you’re in a rush, stick to slower chargers or home charging to avoid premium rates.
“We’re making it easier and more affordable for people to own and run an EV,” said future roads minister Lilian Greenwood. “With expanded access to home charging and a growing public network, the switch to electric is becoming more practical for more drivers.”
The government hopes these developments will not only reduce costs for households but also support a broader shift towards lower-emission travel across the UK.
The expansion of EV charging also aligns with proposals outlined in Carwow’s Future of Motoring Manifesto, where we’re also calling for grants to support home charger installation and measures to make insurance more affordable.
