A reckless night time drive in Essex came to an abrupt end for a group of supercar owners when their cars were seized by the police.

Nine high-performance cars, including a Rolls-Royce, McLaren, and an Audi R8, were seized by Essex Police after reports of dangerous and anti-social driving on major roads in Thurrock on Thursday 21 August.

Officers were called shortly after 7pm following multiple reports from concerned motorists about reckless driving on the M25 and A13.

Witnesses said the cars, including a black Porsche and a white-and-black Lamborghini, were accelerating at high speed, braking suddenly, and forcing other drivers to take evasive action to avoid collisions.

The group of drivers were also seen stopping on the A128 slip road at Orsett Cock to film themselves, creating further hazards on the busy road network.

Specialist Roads Policing Unit officers were deployed and quickly intercepted the convoy. Within 15 minutes, all nine cars had been stopped and seized under Section 59 of the Road Traffic Act. This law allows police to take vehicles being driven in a way that causes alarm, distress or annoyance to other road users.

“This must have been quite a sight with their hazard lights flashing and speeding dangerously one minute then slowing abruptly,” said superintendent Phil Stinger. “Their driving was not only erratic, but selfish. The level of danger involved was astounding.”

Stinger was “thankful” that the road policing offers brought the situation to a safe conclusion very quickly and that no one was hurt.

The owners now have 14 days to reclaim their cars.

What should you do if you witness reckless driving?

Police advise reporting it so they can take action. In Essex, you can also submit dashcam or video footage of dangerous driving directly to investigators through the Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s Extra Eyes initiative.

Similar schemes run across the UK, letting people share dashcam footage or reports of dangerous driving to help police improve road safety. They’re part of wider strategies such as Vision Zero, which aim to make roads safer by involving the public and sharing responsibility.

The Road Safety Trust also funds community projects that aim to improve road safety, supporting initiatives with the same goals as the Extra Eyes programme.

How to find similar programmes

Want to find one in your local area? Here are some suggestions:

  • Check with your local police, as many forces run similar schemes or accept dashcam footage of dangerous driving.
  • Check your local council’s website for road safety pages with information on local projects and partnerships.
  • Charities such as Road Safety GB share information on road safety campaigns and initiatives across the country.
