Rent a flat or don’t have a driveway? New government plans could make charging an electric car at home cheaper and fairer, regardless of where you live.

If you’ve ever wanted an electric car but are worried about how to charge it at home – especially if you rent or don’t have a driveway – things could be about to get a lot simpler and cheaper.

The government today unveiled a new set of proposals aimed at making it easier for everyone to plug in their electric cars, no matter where they live.

Under the plans, new covered car parks will have to include charge points, while the rules that make it hard for people without driveways to install discreet cross-pavement charging gullies could soon be scrapped. That means renters and leaseholders would finally have the same convenient, low-cost access to home charging as homeowners.

The changes could also help more households save some serious money. For instance, families will be able to run their electric cars for as little as 2p per mile if they were to charge them on an off-peak tariff and overnight. That’s the equivalent of travelling from London to Birmingham for £2.50.

Furthermore, the government is looking to cut red tape by speeding up approvals for cross-pavement chargers and potentially scrapping application fees of up to £250. At the same time, new protections would stop landlords from overcharging tenants for electricity used to charge their EVs.

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said the reforms will make switching to electric “fairer, easier, and cheaper,” calling it a “big boost for the growing British EV industry.”

These plans build on a wave of EV support measures from the government: from the £650m Electric Car Grant offering up to £3,750 off certain new models to investments in local charging networks across England.

And with over 86,000 chargers now live nationwide, the UK is rapidly expanding its charging infrastructure to meet surging demand.

But why should this matter to you? Well, for everyday drivers, this could be a gamechanger. Renters and flat-dwellers have long faced an uphill battle when it comes to charging at home, often relying on slower or pricier public chargers.

By removing planning permission barriers and bringing in new measures to protect tenants, owning an electric car could soon become far more accessible and affordable.
