Car changing is a big deal
New research shows overwhelming support among UK drivers for alcohol interlocks, devices that stop a car from starting if the driver has been drinking, as concern over drink-driving remains high.
There’s overwhelming support among UK drivers for alcohol interlocks, with four out of five (82%) in favour of the devices to reduce repeat drink-driving, a new RAC survey shows.
But what are alcohol interlocks? They’re small devices fitted to a car’s ignition. Before you can start the vehicle, you blow into it – if it detects alcohol above the legal limit, the car won’t start. Some models even do random breath checks while you’re driving.
Alcohol interlocks, also called ‘alcolocks’, can also log attempts to drive after drinking, helping the police monitor repeat offenders. Simply put, alcolocks make it much harder to drink and drive, keeping roads safer for everyone.
The tech is already widely used in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and the US.

Here are some stats from the RAC Report on Motoring 2025 regarding support for alcohol interlocks:
- 71% believe all drivers caught over the legal limit should be required to have an interlock installed.
- 23% think only repeat offenders should face this measure.
- Support is strong among younger and middle-aged drivers, with 87% of under-25s and 86% of 25-44-year-olds in favour.
- Nearly three-quarters (73%) of drivers over 65 also support the tech.
Rates of self-reported drink-driving are close to pre-pandemic levels, the report also found. More than 1 in 10 drivers (12%) admitted to driving while they thought they were over the legal limit, with younger drivers more likely to take the risk.
Drink-driving is creeping back to pre-pandemic levels, the RAC Report on Motoring 2025 shows. And more than 1 in 10 drivers (12%) admitted to driving when they thought they were over the legal limit, with younger drivers more likely to take the risk.
In 2023, an estimated 260 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver over the legal alcohol limit, with around 1,600 seriously injured, according to Department for Transport figures.
“With levels of drink-driving still alarmingly high, drivers are keen for stronger action.” said RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis. “Alcohol interlocks have the potential to save lives and reduce serious injuries. The strong public support shows people want change and safer roads.”
How to get an alcolock in the UK
If you want an alcolock (alcohol ignition interlock) in the UK, you’ll need to go through a private supplier as UK courts can’t currently make you use one. People usually get them for personal safety or if a company is managing a fleet of vehicles.
Here are a few things to do and keep in mind:
1. Contact a supplier
Reach out to a UK provider like ALCOLOCK UK or Dräger. They’ll help you figure out whether you want it for personal use or for a fleet, and explain your options for buying or leasing.
2. Installation and costs
You’ll need a professional to install the device. Installation costs typically run from £150-500, depending on your car. Leasing can help spread the cost and make it more manageable.
3. Ongoing maintenance
You’re responsible for keeping the alcolock in good working order, so factor in any maintenance or calibration costs.
Tips to stay safe
Here are some tips for staying safe if you plan to drink:
- Never drive after drinking, even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment.
- Use a taxi, rideshare, or designated driver if you’re drinking.
- Know your limits and wait until fully sober before driving.
- Encourage friends and family to follow the same rules to protect everyone on the road.
