Almost two years after one of the most controversial concept cars in motoring history, the new Jaguar Type 01 is almost here. The interior has been revealed in full, and news editor Jamie Edkins is going to talk you through it.

Back in 2024, Jaguar stopped making cars while it focussed on a shift towards luxury EVs. It launched a wild concept car called the Type 00, showcased an exuberant rebrand and an advertising campaign to go with it, and whipped social media up into a frenzy.

Now, almost two years later, Jaguar’s make-or-break luxury saloon is getting ready to make its first appearance. The full reveal will happen in New York on 6 October, but the interior has been revealed in full ahead of time.

New Jaguar Type 01 interior: how similar is it to the concept?

This is it then – possibly one of the most important new car interiors revealed in the last decade.

You can immediately see the similarities between the Type 01’s cabin and the Type 00 concept, the most distinctive feature being the central spine.

Unlike most centre consoles which stop behind the front seats, the Type 01’s continues right to the back of the car, separating all four passengers. It also has a brass-like finish on top, just like the Type 00 concept.

The screens have been dialled down a bit, although I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. You get a massive display in front of the driver, but the concept car’s passenger screen is gone and in its place you get a flat surface which reminds me of the decking you get on a yacht.

I’m not so sure about the climate control situation though. There’s a skinny little tablet perched on the centre console for things like temperature and media volume, but to me it looks like when you try to balance your phone on something in an old car with nowhere to mount it.

The steering wheel is very similar to the concept car’s, with chunky spokes and a slatted design lower down which mimics the grilles on the rear of the Type 00. The control stalks look similar to the Audi Q3’s – they’re neatly integrated into a single bar behind the wheel.

New Jaguar Type 01 design: will it look as wild as the Type 00?

We’ve only got camouflaged spy shots and teaser images to go on so far, but initial signs are promising. You can clearly see that the Type 01 has a similar long bonnet to the Type 00, which would be excessive on a car with a massive V12 engine under there and is downright bonkers on an EV.

It also appears to have a similar bluff front end to the concept car, with no grilles or fake vents in sight. The Type 00 looked very imposing from the front, and we don’t expect the Type 01 to be any different.

The Type 01 seems to have a more traditional saloon silhouette than the swoopy Type 00 concept, but you can still see the horizontal slatted taillights poking through the wrap. It looks as though the production car will have no rear window as well, just like the Polestar 4.

New Jaguar Type 01 motors and performance

The main reason Jaguar took such a long break from making cars was so it could work on the electric underpinnings for the Type 01. It uses an all-new collection of parts, referred to collectively as the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), and it shares nothing in common with the upcoming Range Rover EV despite both brands being owned by the same parent company.

The Type 01 will have three electric motors which produce over 1,000hp combined, and it also has rear-wheel steering and a clever torque vectoring system to make sure it’s as fun to drive as a Jaguar should be.

It’s actually being benchmarked against Jags of old, with engineers comparing it side-by-side with cars such as the XK120, E-Type and the old XJ.
