Car changing is a big deal
Grey cars may still rule the road, but green is quietly stealing the show.
The UK’s love affair with grey cars shows no sign of ending. It’s now the eighth year grey has been crowned the nation’s favourite new car colour, with more than half a million cruising down UK roads in 2025. But a different colour is now starting to gather pace – green cars are getting more popular.
Around 558,050 grey cars were registered last year, accounting for more than a quarter of all new cars sold, according to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Black followed in second place, enjoying its strongest year since 2019, while blue rounded off the podium as the UK’s most popular non-monochrome choice.
But if you look further down the list, you start to see some quirkier colour choices.

Green makes waves – its best year in two decades

Green may only rank seventh overall, but it was the fastest-growing colour in the top 10. Registrations jumped by an impressive 46.3%, reaching nearly 100,000 cars, the SMMT figures show. That’s the highest level since 2004.
This surge isn’t just about style. It reflects a broader shift in how people think about their cars.
As EVs continue to gain popularity, green has become the natural fit for drivers wanting their cars to match its lower-emissions credentials. In fact, registrations for green electric cars almost doubled over the past year, rising by 95%. One in every 20 new electric cars sold in 2025 were green – a dramatic leap from just one in 300 the year before.
While grey still dominates electric car sales overall, green’s growth suggests buyers are becoming more confident, expressive, and environmentally-minded when choosing their next car.
A comeback colour and fading favourite
Well this is a blast from the past… Silver made a surprise return to the top five for the first time in nearly a decade, marking a comeback for a shade that once dominated our roads in the early 2000s.
In fact, we’ve seen this at Carwow. Enquiries for silver cars climbed to over 80,000 last year, up 11% compared to the year before.
Red, however, continued to fall out of style in 2025. What was once a classic choice has slipped to sixth place and recorded its lowest market share since detailed records began, dropping 14.5% year-on-year.
At the very bottom of the colour chart, turquoise all but disappeared, with just 12 cars registered nationwide, while pink and maroon fared a little better. But it seems that many UK drivers still prefer subtlety over statement – for now.
Here are the top 10 colour choices in the UK:
| Colour | Number of registrations | Market share (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Grey | 558,050 | 27.6% |
| Black | 464,369 | 23.0% |
| Blue | 306,349 | 15.2% |
| White | 265,462 | 13.1% |
| Silver | 127,383 | 6.3% |
| Red | 116,576 | 4.0% |
| Green | 99,793 | 4.9% |
| Yellow | 10,725 | 0.5% |
| Orange | 9,614 | 0.5% |
| Mauve | 5,711 | 0.3% |
What this says about buying habits
The rise of green cars paints us a clearer picture. While many drivers still choose neutral colours thanks to resale value or familiarity, more are starting to use colour to reflect value, not just tastes.
As electrification reshapes the car market, colour choices are beginning to evolve with it. Green may not yet rival grey’s dominance, but its strongest growth in 20 years suggests a quiet shift is underway.
As SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes puts it, while monochrome still leads the pack, “the surge in green matches the growing popularity of electrified cars as the new car market decarbonises.”
This growth in interest is exactly what we’re seeing at Carwow. Enquiries for green cars on our platform have grown by 51% compared to the same period in 2024. This gives us insight into future colour demand and suggests that interest in green cars will continue to rise.
Manufacturers are responding to demand too, offering a wider range of finishes and shades than ever before. This gives you more freedom to stand out on the road, even in a sea of grey.
If 2025 is anything to go by, green is no longer just a niche choice for car colours. This trend shows up in the latest SMMT figures as well as in Carwow new car enquiries, hinting at what buyers will favour in the years ahead.
And while it may not be the UK’s favourite car colour just yet, green’s moment is clearly gathering speed.
