A new government-backed scheme forces every UK forecourt to share live fuel prices, helping you hunt down the cheapest petrol and diesel and potentially save up to £4.50 per tank.

A major new rule affecting every petrol station in the UK comes into force today, making it much easier for drivers to find the cheapest fuel nearby.

All petrol stations must now update their petrol and diesel prices to third-party apps and websites within 30 minutes of any change. This is part of the government’s new Fuel Finder scheme, which publishes live fuel prices from every UK forecourt.

You’ll be able to view these prices for free on the official Fuel Finder website and through popular map and price-comparison apps. This means you can quickly check fuel prices before filling up, rather than driving around looking at forecourt signs.

The aim of the scheme is simple:

  • Help motorists avoid overpaying.
  • Make it easier to compare local prices.
  • Increase competition between fuel retailers.

Choosing the cheapest petrol station within a five-minute drive could save drivers of a typical family car up to £4.50 per tank, according to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said the scheme should stop drivers having to hunt around for prices and could eventually allow live fuel prices to appear directly on satnavs and map apps.

She added that it’s also essential to improve competition across the fuel market. “We need to reignite competition among fuel retailers and that means making it easier for drivers to compare up-to-date prices so retailers have to compete harder for their business.”

Trade body Fuels Industry UK has confirmed that all petrol stations must take part in the scheme, whether they are independent or part of a major chain.

RAC data shows average petrol prices throughout 2025 were 135.69p per litre, while diesel averaged 142.96p – both down compared with 2024. Drivers who shop around are already seeing savings, with supermarket forecourts typically charging about 3p per litre less than average, saving around £1.50 on a full tank.

Simon Williams, head of policy at breakdown service the RAC, said the Fuel Finder scheme could push prices even lower in the future.

“We hope this is the start of the journey to cheaper fuel prices around the UK,” said Williams. “The Government has set up this scheme with the intention of increasing competition among retailers to give drivers better value at the pumps.”
