Drivers in London could soon be monitored by a new generation of ‘invisible’ speed cameras that don’t flash and can track vehicles across multiple lanes, as part of efforts to cut road deaths.

A new generation of high-tech speed cameras that do not flash and require no road markings is set to be trialled across London as part of efforts to reduce road casualties.

The cameras use advanced 4D imaging radar technology capable of detecting speeding vehicles across up to five lanes of traffic in both directions. Unlike traditional systems, they can also measure a vehicle’s distance, elevation and direction of travel.

The trial will take place at nine locations across the capital, focusing on roads with 20mph and 30mph speed limits. Boroughs involved include:

  • Haringey
  • Tower Hamlets
  • Havering
  • Croydon
  • Hammersmith
  • Fulham
  • Brent
  • Hackney
  • Ealing
  • Sutton

Transport for London (TfL), which is leading the project alongside the Metropolitan Police, said the upgrade is essential to ensure consistent enforcement as part of its Vision Zero road safety strategy.

Officials say the new systems combine high-resolution cameras with advanced sensors, making them more reliable and capable of producing clearer images than existing speed cameras. Most current cameras can only monitor up to three lanes of traffic in a single direction.

TfL has not set a fixed end date for the trial and will assess its effectiveness on an ongoing basis. If successful, similar systems could be deployed on busy roads across the UK to improve compliance with speed limits and reduce casualties.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said the technology could help tackle “poor compliance” with 20mph speed limits in London, though it also called for more action on issues such as drivers using mobile phones at the wheel.

Visible speed cameras are often coloured yellow.

What this could mean for you

These new cameras could mean big change in how speed limits are enforced in London – and potentially across the uk.

Because the cameras don’t flash, you might not realise you’ve been caught speeding at the time. That means you could receive a penalty notice without the usual visual warning you might expect from traditional speed cameras.

The ability to monitor multiple lanes in both directions also means there are fewer “blind spots” where you might have previously avoided detection. In practice, this could lead to more consistent enforcement across busy roads you drive every day.

If you’re used to relying on road markings or visible camera flashes as cues to slow down, you’ll need to adjust your driving habits. Experts at TfL say the goal is to encourage you to stick to speed limits at all times, rather than braking only when you spot a camera.

At the same time, road safety groups argue this technology could help reduce collisions and save lives – especially in areas with lower speed limits designed to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users.
