Au revoir to the old as Toyota reveals new Auris
You need quite a special car to make waves in the family hatchback sector. The likes of the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 constantly get rave reviews so, for Toyota to break into the segment, it’ll need to make its challenger very good indeed.
The Auris has only been around since 2013 but the Japanese brand has decided to show off the updated model along with the Touring Sports estate and newly updated Avensis at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Details for the new UK-built models are still scarce but will get filled in as the show draws closer.
Toyota Auris – styling
The most obvious change is the restyled front bumper which now has a more upmarket, aggressive look. This houses reshaped headlights and a reprofiled grille area that looks similar to the upcoming Mirai hydrogen car. There are no shots of the rear but we expect a similar treatment including a reshaped bumper and updated brake lights to mirror the front.
The cabin design hasn’t changed much but, according to Toyota, is now made from much more upmarket materials to enhance the feeling of quality. This is expected to be joined by a host of new technologies and safety systems.
Toyota Auris – engines and hybrid
Roughly half of all Auris models sold had Toyota’s familiar hybrid system borrowed from the Prius and, considering its popularity, is expected to remain mostly unchanged for the refresh. That means over 70mpg and sub-100g/km of CO2 emissions.
No details about the more conventional engine options have been revealed but some motoring outlets are speculating that the Auris could benefit from the 1.6-litre BMW-derived diesel engine that’s just made it into the Toyota Verso.
