This is the new Toyota GR GT, and it’s the spiritual successor to the iconic Lexus LFA. Here’s everything you need to know.

Toyota has one of the most varied model ranges of any manufacturer out there. You can walk into a showroom and leave in anything from the tiny Aygo X hybrid city car, to the four-wheel drive rally-bred GR Yaris hot hatch.

And now it’s developing this – the GR GT. It’s a low-slung, V8-powered supercar to take on cars like the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. You can also think of it as a spiritual successor to the Lexus LFA – so it’s got a lot on its shoulders.

It’s still in the early stages of development right now, but Toyota is aiming to launch this car in 2027.

New Toyota GR GT engine and performance

When you’re building a successor to the screaming V10-powered Lexus LFA, you need to fit it with a pretty special engine. The GR GT may not have 10 cylinders, but it does use an all-new twin-turbocharged V8.

This engine is paired to a hybrid system for added power. Exact figures are still to be confirmed, but Toyota has told us what sort of numbers it’s aiming for.

The GR GT will have at least 650hp and 850Nm of torque, and the top speed will be touching 200mph at a minimum. That puts it in the firing line of the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

New Toyota GR GT chassis and suspension

Toyota sports cars aren’t about figures on paper, they’re about driver involvement and handling. The GR GT is front-engined and rear-wheel drive, and the weight distribution is almost perfect at 45:55 front to rear.

It’s also going to weigh 1,750kg at the most, and Toyota is putting great emphasis on lowering the centre of gravity as much as possible to make it more agile. The driving position has been made as low as possible, and components like the engine and gearbox have been designed to keep the weight as low down in the car as it can be.

The GR GT uses Toyota’s first all-aluminium body frame which is both light and rigid, and some of the body panels are also made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the best blend of strength and lightness.

New Toyota GR GT design and interior

The GR GT is striking to look at, but it’s actually been designed with aerodynamics at the forefront.

The air intakes in the bottom corners of the front bumper channel air around the brakes, before then sending it down the sides of the car to the rear wing. The bonnet scoop also shoves air through the engine bay and out the two vents by the windscreen for improved cooling.

Inside, the GR GT puts the driver first. You get low-slung, sporty bucket seats and a clear digital driver’s display in front of you, and there are physical buttons in the centre console for your climate control to make everything easy to use on the move. The red trim brightens things up nicely, too.

When can I buy the new Toyota GR GT?

The GR GT is in the early stages of development, but Toyota says it’ll be launched in 2027.

And if you want one, you’ll probably have to get in quick. Toyota hasn’t said how many of these cars will be built, but when the GR86 and GR Yaris launched a few years ago they sold out pretty much immediately. There’s a huge appetite for Toyota’s sports cars, and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this one.
