This is the new Omoda 5 hybrid, and it’s the first model from this Chinese brand to be offered with a self-charging hybrid engine. Here’s news editor Jamie Edkins to tell you about all the changes.

Omoda is one of the fastest-growing Chinese brands in the UK, and the Omoda 5 is its biggest-selling model. The bargain price tag and generous kit list makes it look very appealing, but it’s always had one thing letting it down.

That would be the loud and thirsty petrol engine, which used to be the only option unless you fancied the all-electric Omoda E5. Well now Omoda has launched a hybrid version which promises 53mpg, and the changes go beyond a new engine option.

New Omoda 5 hybrid: What’s under the bonnet?

Until now, the Omoda 5 was only available with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 147hp. It’s more than powerful enough, but the 31mpg claimed fuel economy is nothing to shout about and it’s noisy under acceleration.

The new Omoda 5 SHS-H (or hybrid, as we’ll call it), looks to be a much more enticing proposition. It has a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a small battery and electric motor. It can drive at low speeds without using the engine at all, making it nice and quiet around town.

The hybrid puts out 204hp, and 0-62mph takes 7.9 seconds. That’s over two seconds quicker than the petrol version, but you’re probably more interested in the fuel economy.

It’ll do a claimed 53mpg, which is much better than the petrol Omoda 5 but still trails behind the Toyota Yaris Cross and Renault Captur. Both of those cars will do over 60mpg according to official tests.

New Omoda 5 hybrid: What else has changed?

There’s more to the new Omoda 5 hybrid than just a new engine, as there are also a couple of styling tweaks to help it stand out.

It has a different grille to the petrol version which looks a bit sleeker, and the LED daytime running lights come from the electric Omoda E5. The alloy wheel design is new as well, although they are still 18-inches as standard.

New Omoda 5 price and specs: Is it still great value?

In short, yes. The new Omoda 5 hybrid starts from £25,740, placing it between the petrol model and the electric E5. It’s also a few hundred pounds more expensive than a hybrid Renault Captur, but wait until you see how much kit you get as standard.

All cars get twin 12.3-inch screens, LED headlights and adaptive cruise control. To get all these features on a hybrid Captur you’d have to go for the top-spec version, which would cost you £28.795. A basic Toyota Yaris Cross has a similar amount of equipment, but it starts from over £27,000.

If you want even more for your money, the range-topping Noble model comes with heated and ventilated front seats, a surround-view camera, interior ambient lighting and a Sony sound system. This car costs just over £29,000, so it’s still pretty cheap for what you get.

Should I buy the new Omoda 5 hybrid?

The first Omoda 5 hybrids will start appearing on UK roads in March 2026, and we’ll be getting behind the wheel as soon as they land.

On paper, this seems like a great-value hybrid car which will return decent fuel economy, and it has the potential to solve the Omoda 5’s biggest drawback – that lacklustre engine. Stay tuned for our full review of this car.
