How to remove bad smells from your car before selling
April 06, 2026 by Siobhan Doyle
Tired of stepping into a car that doesn’t smell fresh? Learn how to quickly banish stubborn odours so your car feels clean, fresh, and more appealing to buyers.
Nothing puts a buyer off faster than a car that doesn’t smell clean. Even if your vehicle is mechanically sound and well cared for, lingering odours from food, pets, smoke or damp carpets can instantly reduce its appeal and could even knock down its value.
The good news is that most bad car smells aren’t permanent – they’re usually trapped in fabrics, vents and overlooked corners. With the right approach, you can get rid of them quickly and leave your car smelling fresh and ready to sell.
Here are eight tips and tricks to help you get your car smelling its best before it goes on the market.

1. Start with a deep interior clean
Start with a good clean, since odours stick to dirt and debris. Removing the source is the most important step.
Take out the floor mats and clean them separately. Then vacuum the whole interior, including the seats, carpets, boot, and areas under the seats and along seams.
Use a stiff brush on the seats and carpets first to loosen any dirt, then vacuum again.
Don’t forget the boot – it’s often overlooked, but smells can easily build up there.
2. Neutralise odours in fabrics
Once the visible dirt is gone, treat the fabrics that hold smells.
Sprinkle baking soda generously over carpets and upholstery. Leave it for a few hours – or ideally overnight – so it can absorb odours, then vacuum it thoroughly.
This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce stubborn smells without harsh chemicals.
3. Use natural odour absorbers
To tackle any remaining lingering smells, leave natural absorbers inside the car for 24 hours with the windows closed.
Good options include:
- A bowl of baking soda
- Coffee grounds
- Charcoal briquettes
These work by absorbing odours from the air and soft surfaces, helping to freshen the entire cabin.
4. Refresh the air vents
Bad smells often come from the ventilation system, especially if there’s been damp or mildew build-up.
Turn on your car’s fan and set it to circulate air through the system. While it’s running, spray a disinfectant or dedicated air-con cleaner into the air intake vents (usually located at the base of the windscreen). This helps eliminate bacteria and mildew that can cause musty smells.
5. Clean all interior surfaces
Wipe down every hard surface in the car, including plastics, vinyl and leather. These materials can hold onto smoke, food and general stale odours over time.
Use a suitable interior cleaner or a gentle solution designed for car interiors. For smoke smells in particular, a mix of white distilled vinegar and water on a microfibre cloth can help neutralise lingering odours.
6. Replace the cabin air filter
A dirty cabin air filter is a hidden source of bad smells. Over time, it can collect dust, moisture and bacteria, which then circulate through the car when the ventilation is used.
Replacing it is a quick fix – around 10-20 minutes. At a garage, it typically costs between £45 and £75 for parts and labour, according to Halfords. This can make a noticeable difference to overall air freshness.
7. Tackle specific odours at the source
Some smells need targeted treatment:
Mildew or damp smells:
Make sure the interior is completely dry. Use heaters or fans to remove moisture and treat affected areas with an enzyme-based cleaner.
Smoke smells:
Wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution, then ventilate the car thoroughly.
Spilled milk or sour smells:
These are particularly stubborn. Use a baking soda and water solution or a specialist probiotic cleaner designed to break down organic residues.
8. Don’t forget hidden damp spots
One of the most common mistakes is overlooking areas where moisture collects. Always check under floor mats, beneath seats and inside the boot for damp patches or hidden spills. Even a small amount of trapped moisture can keep odours coming back.
Getting rid of bad car smells before selling isn’t just about comfort – it’s about making a strong first impression. A clean-smelling car feels better maintained and more valuable, and it can help it appeal more to buyers, potentially making it sell faster.
With a bit of deep cleaning and the right deodorising techniques, you can transform your car’s interior and leave it feeling fresh, inviting, and ready for its next owner.
