Mat’s car of the day: why a Volvo ES90 for £480 per month is a bit of a bargain

Mat Watson has found a lease deal on the Volvo ES90 which is around 50% cheaper than the new EX60.
I recently reviewed the Volvo ES90, a slinky electric car which is an alternative to the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE. While it’s stylish, comfortable and has a lovely cabin, I think the new EX60 is a better all-rounder.
However, because the Volvo EX60 is such a new car, the leasing prices are still a bit steep right now. If you’re looking to lease your next luxury EV, there are much better deals to be had on the ES90.

Leasing a Volvo ES90: how to get the best value for money
Volvo currently sells three large, premium electric cars. The EX60 is the smallest, but also the best, and it costs from £57,000. The EX90 is a big seven-seater flagship costing £73,000, and the ES90 sits in the middle at £65,000. You can think of it as an EX90 which has been squished to make a swoopy saloon.
If I was buying in cash, or on finance, I’d have the EX60. However, if you want the convenience of leasing your next car then there are deals on the ES90 which are hard to ignore.
You can lease the ES90 Extended Range Plus for £483 per month with an upfront payment of £6,100. This is over three years and 30,000 miles, costing you a total of around £23,000.
By contrast, the best deal I could find on the EX90 would cost you £907 per month over the same time and mileage, with an £11,200 upfront payment. That would run you almost £43,000 in total.
And because the new EX60 has only just come out, the lease prices on that car are pretty high as well. It’ll cost £890 per month over three years and 30,000 miles, with an £11,000 upfront payment bringing your total to just over £42,000.
So the ES90 is almost half the price of those cars if you lease it, and there are a few other reasons you should consider this car.
Three good things about the Volvo ES90
1. It’s supremely comfortable
Volvo knows a thing or two about how to make a comfy cruiser, and the ES90 is a car you could go for miles in. The seats are glorious – they’re so comfy in fact that I’d like some in my house – and the suspension soaks up bumps in the road really well. It’s also near-silent at motorway speeds, making it ideal for long-distance driving.
2. It’s surprisingly efficient
When I tested the Volvo EX90, I was disappointed by its poor efficiency. Given this ES90 shares a lot of parts with that car, I didn’t have high hopes for it. However, I managed to average 3.9 miles per kWh, which works out to a real-world range of 351 miles. That’s pretty close to the claimed 400-mile figure.
3. The interior is lovely
I love the ES90’s interior. The materials are all so lovely, with loads of soft leather and solid metal trim. The switchgear is all nicely-damped as well, and I’d definitely go for the light colour option. It just feels more special inside than a BMW i5.
Three annoying things about the Volvo ES90
1. The tech is a bit glitchy
There are a few bits of tech on this car which are annoying. The central screen glitched out on me a few times, which is a problem when all your main controls are operated through it. The key is a bit naff as well. You have to charge it on the wireless charging pad, and it doesn’t always recognise that you’re standing next to the car to let you in.
2. The visibility is shocking
The view out the ES90’s rear window is almost non-existent thanks to the sloping roofline. The rear headrests also block what little visibility you have, so you end up driving this car like a van and rely on the massive door mirrors.
3. The boot isn’t that big
You get 424 litres of boot space in the Volvo ES90, which is around 100 litres less than you get in a Volvo EX60. I still managed to squeeze eight suitcases into the Volvo, but if you want maximum practicality then the EX60 is a better bet.
