New BMW Concept Speedtop revealed: is this V8-powered shooting brake the coolest BMW ever made?

Car changing is a big deal
We certainly think it’s up there. It uses the M8 Competition’s engine and all-wheel drive system, and only 70 will ever be made.

- Super-rare V8-powered shooting brake
- Stunning exterior design
- Shares the M8’s 625hp engine
- Bespoke interior trim
- Only 70 to be built
This is the new BMW Concept Speedtop. It comes almost exactly one year after the Concept Skytop was released, and is essentially a shooting brake – posh word for two-door swoopy estate – version of that car.
Underneath that stunning bodywork you’ll find the same basic mechanicals as the BMW M8 Competition, so you can expect it to be blisteringly fast. It’s also likely to be painfully expensive, because just 70 Speedtops will be built.
New BMW Speedtop design
BMW must’ve been very pleased with the convertible Concept Skytop last year, because the new Concept Speedtop shares a lot of that car’s design. That’s no bad thing, because it is drop-dead gorgeous. BMW’s designs of late have been controversial to say the least, just look at the XM, but this looks fabulous from every angle.

Starting up front you have the return of BMW’s iconic “shark nose” bonnet. It’s inspired by the 507 and Z8 roadsters, and it’s a timeless design with the wide kidney grilles and slim headlights.

It’s the side profile which separates this from the convertible Skytop, because the Speedtop is what’s known by design nerds as a shooting brake. This is basically a posh word for a low-slung, two-door estate car, and it’s set off by the two-tone alloy wheels.

Moving to the rear you have muscular wheelarches and a large roof spoiler, as well as ultra-slim LED taillights and huge oval exhausts – it seems like BMW has been inspired by Audi’s RS models on that front.
New BMW Concept Speedtop engine and performance

Underneath that head-turning bodywork beats the heart of a BMW M8 Competition, meaning it has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 625hp and all-wheel drive. There are no exact performance stats for the Speedtop, but you can expect 0-60mph to take around the same time as the M8, so 3.2 seconds.
New BMW Concept Speedtop interior

Inside things look slightly less bespoke, because the basic interior layout is shared with the BMW 8 Series. It has been heavily customised, though, to help this ultra-rare car stand out.

The two-tone white and brown leather is unique to this car, and it extends much further than it does in your average 840d. There’s also some bespoke luggage which lives in a special compartment behind the seats, and the boot is also lined in luxurious leather.
New BMW Concept Speedtop: when can I buy one?
Right now, but you’ll need to be quick. Just 70 of these Concept Speedtops will ever be built, and that rarity is also unlikely to come cheap.
The convertible Skytop was even more exclusive; just 50 of those were ever made and they cost around £500,000 each. Despite this, the Speedtop is likely to cost about the same.
