Car changing is a big deal
The new BMW i4 has been spotted testing for the first time. It’s essentially a convertible version of the new i3 saloon, and this is everything we know about it so far.
This is the new BMW i4 – an electric replacement for the current 4 Series and an alternative to cars like the Mercedes CLE and MG Cyberster. It’s not a replacement for the existing i4 four-door though – that’s what the new i3 is for.
It’ll be available as both a convertible and a coupe, and our spy photographers have spotted the drop-top version out and about during development testing.

New BMW i4 convertible design
This is the first time we’ve spotted the new BMW i4 on the road, and even in this disguise you can see the resemblance to the new i3 saloon.

It has the same wide kidney grilles as that car, and the alloy wheels fitted to this test car look the same as the ones fitted to the i3 as well.

The side profile is more rakish than the current 4 Series convertible, with a body line which angles up towards the rear of the car making it look a bit more muscular. You can also see a similar light design to the i3 at the rear of the car.
New BMW i4 convertible batteries, motors and range
The design resemblance to the i3 is no surprise, because the two cars will be pretty much the same under the skin. There are no confirmed stats just yet, but we can get a good idea by looking at the saloon.

The BMW i3 has a 108kWh battery with up to 563 miles of range. Given the fact convertible cars tend to be less aerodynamic than something with a fixed roof, the i4 convertible could have closer to 550 miles of range.
There will be a two-door coupe version of the i4 as well, and that could match or beat the i3 saloon for range.

It’ll almost certainly share the i3’s dual-motor setup as well, which would give it 463hp and all-wheel drive.
New BMW i4 convertible interior

You can just about get a peek of the i4’s interior when you look through the side of this test car, but it’s heavily covered. It appears to have the same steering wheel as the i3, and it’ll have the same infotainment system as that car as well.

That means it’ll use the Panoramic iDrive setup, a full-width digital driver’s display at the base of the windscreen, as well as the strange-shaped infotainment screen in the centre.
New BMW i4 convertible: when can I buy one?
We expect the new i4 convertible and coupe to be revealed in mid-2027, following the launch of the 3 Series and i3 Touring.
It’s a bit soon to put a price on this car right now, but given it’s an EV you can bet it’ll cost more than the current 4 Series. That car starts from £54,000, so the new i4 is likely to cost closer to £60,000.
