Car changing is a big deal

The free, easy way to change your car online

Mat Watson rates the BMW i7 highly. It’s great to drive, packed with tech and feels super-luxurious, and thanks to some heavy depreciation you can pick one up for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

I think the BMW i7 is the best car in its class, and if you want to drive around in a luxury limousine for less than you’d think, buying a used one makes a lot of sense.

I’ve found a cracking deal on a second-hand BMW i7, and here’s why I think it’s worth a look. I’ll also flag some potential drawbacks to consider before taking the plunge.

The BMW i7 usually starts from over £100,000, and that puts it way out of reach for most people. However, luxury cars like this tend to depreciate quite quickly, especially electric ones, and that means you can pick up a bargain.

Take this example from 2024. It’s the desirable M Sport model with 455hp and 373 miles of range, and it’s only got 32,600 miles on the clock. The price? It’s up for just under £50,000. You can spec a Peugeot E-3008 to a similar price if you tick every option, but it still won’t be as luxurious as this.

Three things I love about the BMW i7

1. It’s one of the best electric cars to drive

You’d never guess that this thing weighs well over two tonnes from the way it drives. It feels agile on a twisty road, but it’s the comfort which really stands out. The i7 glides over bumps like they don’t exist, and it’s whisper-quiet on the motorway.

2. The interior is really luxurious

The BMW i7 was recently updated with an all-new interior, but the old car still has one of the best cabins in the business. All the materials look and feel expensive, and the seats are some of the most comfortable you can get.

3. The technology is top-notch

This is BMW’s flagship electric car, and as such you can get it with some really impressive features. It can remember tricky parking manoeuvres and do them automatically next time you arrive at that location, and you can get a massive 32-inch cinema screen in the back. Just remember that these are optional extras, so check the car you’re looking at has them fitted if it’s something you want.

Three annoying things about the BMW i7

1. The boot isn’t the best

The i7’s 500-litre boot is decent, but it’s 25 litres down on the petrol 7 Series and 110 litres behind the Mercedes EQS. That car also has a more useful hatchback tailgate, whereas the i7 has a saloon boot.

2. A Mercedes EQS goes further on a charge

The Mercedes EQS can do a whopping 542 miles on a charge, which is 169 miles more than the used BMW i7 I’ve found. The latest i7 has over 450 miles of range, which is much better but still some way off the Merc.

3. Fiddly touchscreen controls

There are no buttons for the climate control in the BMW i7 – you operate them through the touchscreen. You also have to go through the screen to adjust the following distance for the active cruise control, which is just overly complicated compared to having a button on the steering wheel like most other cars do.
