The best alloy wheel cleaners in 2026: how to keep your rims in tip-top shape

April 15, 2026 by

We all know a clean car is nicer to drive (honestly, it is) and makes you look like a more mechanically sympathetic driver, not to mention it will impress the heck out of your parents-in-law if you pull up in something shiny rather than something crusty.

However, when it comes to car cleaning time, many of us ignore our alloy wheels, or at least only give them a cursory wipe with a sponge right at the end (or worse, submit them to the wheel brushes in an automated car wash). Which is kind of ridiculous, as alloy wheels ain’t cheap — a set of 20-inch rims can run you more than £2,000 as an option — and not cleaning them properly is like buying a pair of really expensive shoes and then carelessly tramping them across a muddy field.

Why bother with a specialised alloy wheel cleaner? Well, simply because our wheels get subjected to the worst of all road conditions — they splash through muddy puddles, they get covered in brake dust and splashes of sticky tar, they are subjected to dust, dirt, mud, even cow poo! Alloy wheels are made of relatively soft, pliable metal, so using a special cleaner means less scrubbing and therefore less chance of scratching and scoring the surface, keeping your wheels looking fresher for longer.

Here are Carwow’s top five alloy wheel cleaner picks…

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

1. Autoglym Advanced All Wheel Cleaner

  • Price from: £17.10 (1.0-litre spray bottle)
  • Best for: Ease of use
  • Buy it from: Halfords

As you’d expect from a company with Autoglym’s experience and knowledge, its alloy wheel cleaner is among the very best, and as it turns out easiest, to use. Of course, that also means that it’s not cheap to buy — no Autoglym product is ever going to be found in the bargain bucket — but it’s small beer compared to the cost of your wheels, and once you’ve bought the spray bottle (which admittedly has an awkward trigger action) you can buy 2.5-litre refills which are better value for money overall.

The beauty of the Advanced All Wheel Cleaner is that it’s a doddle to use. Just spray it on, leave it to sit on the wheel for between two and four minutes, and then just rinse it off with high-pressure water. No need to crouch down and get scrubbing. Ah, bliss.

2. Bilt-Hamber Auto Wheel

  • Price from: £16.20 (1.0-litre spray bottle)
  • Best for: Quick action
  • Buy it from: Amazon

It may sound like a German brand, but Bilt-Hamber is actually a British company, so it feels good to be supporting the local team. It’s no harm that the brand has won plenty of accolades for its products in the past few years. Little wonder, then, that this Auto Wheel spray is particularly good and easy to use. Once sprayed on, the suggested waiting time is as little as 15 seconds, but you’d probably be best to leave it on for around a minute. The bottle comes with its own dedicated scrubbing brush for awkward stains or tight corners, but depending on how grubby your wheels are, you might well find that a spray-and-rinse will do the trick.

3. Duel Auto Care Axis Wheel Cleaner

  • Price from: £10 (500ml pre-mix bottle)
  • Best for: Real value
  • Buy it from: Amazon, Duel Auto direct

Hang on, a smaller bottle meaning that the fluid inside is actually more expensive than the Autoglym stuff? Have we gone mad? Well, no actually — Duel Auto Care’s alloy wheel cleaner comes in a 500ml bottle of concentrate, meaning that you can mix it at home to the strength you need. At the recommended 1:3 cleaner:water ratio for seriously baked-on stains (yes, this is starting to sound like a Fairy Liquid ad…) it’s pretty good value, and at the 1:20 mix it’s almost crazy cheap. It’s a good, solid cleaner too, which needs very little in the way of scrubbing. Just remember to provide your own squirty bottle – a rinsed-out window cleaner bottle will do the job nicely.

4. Simoniz Ultracare Wheel Cleaner

  • Price from: £6 (500ml spray bottle)
  • Best for: Cheap and easy to use
  • Buy it from: Amazon, holtsauto.com

Simoniz is one of the most recognisable brands in the car-care market, but that doesn’t mean it’ll cost you the Earth to buy. This Ultracare Wheel Cleaner comes in a smaller spray bottle than some others, but even if you had to buy two, it’s still cracking value. It’s not quite as good as some others at clearing hardened brake dust marks, but with a bit of light scrubbing it’ll do the job nicely. As with other products, it’s best to leave it sit for a minute or two, and it’s safe to use on plastic parts, but it’s not a super-strong cleaner; more one for regular low-intensity cleaning.

5. Halford’s Colour Changing Wheel Cleaner

  • Price from: £7.48 (500ml-litre spray bottle)
  • Best for: Cheap refills
  • Buy it from: Halfords

Halfords is, of course, a well-trusted brand when it comes to car care, and while this alloy cleaner isn’t as good in terms of peak performance as some of the others on this list — it will probably need a couple of extra squirts and a good scrub to get the best from it — it, like many of the other cleaners here, sprays on in a bright colour so that you can see where the liquid is sticking to the wheel. Plus, with a 5.0-litre refill bottle available for £22, that gives the Halford’s wheel cleaner an unbeatable 44p per 500ml long-term cost.
