What is Ford ST-Line trim and is it worth it?

Ford has announced ST-Line, a new trim level available on its Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and Kuga models. Sharing the two letters that single out performance variants of two of Ford’s biggest selling cars, it’d be safe to assume the ST-Line cars will add some sportiness to the current ranges. But what do they offer? We take a look at how the new models fit in.
What is Ford ST-Line?
For those familiar with the current Ford trim levels, the ST-Line cars are pretty much identical to the outgoing Zetec S models in all but name. In other words, ST-Line cars offer buyers sporty styling touches and suspension tweaks inspired by the full-fat Fiesta ST and Focus ST models. These versions feature more modest engine options that sacrifice a little performance for lower running costs, a cheaper purchase price and smaller insurance premiums.
How can I spot a Ford ST-Line?
From the outside, the Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and Kuga ST-Line’s body kits feature deeper bumpers front and rear, a honeycomb grille, lower side sills and a rear spoiler. Alloy wheels measuring 17-inches for the Fiesta and Focus are finished in Rock Metallic paint – the same shade as the wheels found on the ST variants of the Fiesta and Focus. The Kuga receives larger 18 or 19-inch alloys in a similar dark colour. Like the current Zetec S ranges, special Red and Black editions are likely to appear in the future.
What’s new inside the ST-Line?
The cabin also gains a number of ST-inspired touches. ST-Line badging adorns the door sill scuff plates, while sports seats hold driver and front passenger more firmly in place. Other changes include a three-spoke steering wheel, an ST gear knob, aluminium-faced pedals and a dark roof headliner.
Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and Kuga ST-Line driving and engines
The Fiesta ST-Line is offered with a choice of four engines. Three petrol units are based on the 1.0-litre EcoBoost motor, available with either 99, 123 or 138hp. A diesel is also offered – the 1.5-litre unit produces 94hp and returns a claimed 78.5mpg. The larger Focus is offered with a choice of five engines. Petrol engines range from 123 to 180hp, and the diesel pair produce 118hp and 148hp respectively. The Mondeo is only offered with the choice of two 2.0-litre diesel engines with either 148 or 178hp. Both units are also offered with the choice of six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes and the option of four-wheel drive. All ST-Line models ride on sports suspension that sits 10mm closer to the road than regular models. The Kuga is available with a range of three petrol engines, including a frugal 1.5-litre diesel engine that can return 64.2mpg and a more potent turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol unit with 180hp – the latter is available with either two or four-wheel drive. All models come fitted with lowered suspension.
Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and Kuga ST-Line prices and release date
The Fiesta ST-Line costs from £15,645 and the Focus ST-Line range from £20,595. That means that the Focus costs the same as the old Zetec S, while the Fiesta is £500 cheaper. The Fiesta and Focus ST-Line models are available to order now. The cheapest ST-Line Kuga will be available from 1 September 2016 and will set you back £25,845.
