Car changing is a big deal
The electric Geely EX2 was the best-selling car in China in 2025, and now it’s heading to the UK to give the Renault 5 and BYD Dolphin something to think about
This may be the best-selling car you’ve never heard of. Around 50,000 examples of the Geely EX2 found homes in China in the last months of 2025 – for reference, the best-selling car in the UK, the Ford Puma, sold just over 50,000 examples over the entire year.
The EX2, also known as the Geome Xingyuan, is also reported to be the second-best selling EV in the world just after the Tesla Model Y. And its influence is set to expand, as the EX2 will come to the UK market before the end of 2026.
We had a good opportunity to poke around the car at Geely’s HQ in Linhai, China, and it’s fair to say early signs are impressive considering the car sells in its home market for as little as £7,000.
Geely EX2: specs and range
The EX2 is a compact car, and at just over 4.1m in length it’s just a little bigger than the likes of the Renault 5 or Vauxhall Corsa. In its native China, it’s offered in two variants.

There’s a basic model with a 30kWh battery and a 79hp electric motor – this can cover 193 miles on a charge. The posher one gets 116hp and a 40kWh battery with a range of 255 miles – though bear in mind that these are under Chinese testing protocols, which are a bit more generous than the WLTP standard that European cars use. Those numbers in the UK would likely be around 150 and 200 miles respectively, and lower still in the real world.
It’s likely that only the larger battery would be sold in the UK initially, though if the price is right the cheaper model could act as a more spacious alternative to the BYD Dolphin Surf or Dacia Spring. It’ll also charge at a rate of 160kW, though no times have been given.
What’s the Geely EX2 like?
We got a chance to have a good poke around a static version of the EX2 at Geely’s HQ and manufacturing plant in Linhai, China. On first impressions, there’s more than a hint of GWM Ora 03 about its smooth lines, retro dual-tone paintjob and expressive headlights.
The interior is very impressive, though. It’s seriously roomy – there’s space in the back seats for a six-footer to sit comfortably behind a driver of the same size, which is much more than you can say for the Renault 5 or Vauxhall Corsa Electric. There’s a totally flat floor, too, and the 375-litre boot is closer in size to a VW Golf than other electric superminis. Not to mention the 70-litre frunk, ideal for keeping charging cables.
Up front, it’s nicely spacious too – there’s a huge storage area underneath the centre console plus reasonable door bins and an under-armrest cubby.

The dashboard has some nice touches – there are city skyline graphics on the doors and dash, backlit by the ambient lighting, and the whole centre console and door card is upholstered in artificial leather making it feel nicely plush.
We didn’t get much of a chance to play around with the infotainment system (since we couldn’t figure out how to change it out of Thai) but it’s the same operating system as you get in the Geely EX5 SUV – which means it’s quick and responsive, but burdened with a few too many layers of menus to navigate through.
How much will the Geely EX2 cost?
Well, the price tag of around £7,000 certainly won’t transfer over from China, but Geely in the UK is definitely aiming for good value. A starting price of about £16,000 could be possible, depending on which battery and motor options are carried over.
Would that be enough to take the fight to the budget EV alternatives? Well, 50,000 people a month can’t be wrong… can they?
