Is the Jaecoo 5 a good car?
Having already found some success in the UK with the value-for-money Jaecoo 7, the Chinese brand is back for more, and it’s now moving into the small SUV market with this, the Jaecoo 5. It’s a compact SUV, making it an alternative to the likes of the Ford Puma and Volkswagen T-Cross.
The 5 has striking looks for a small car. That massive grille might prove a bit divisive, but you only have to drive by your local Land Rover dealer to see where the inspiration for the rest of the bodywork came from — the styling has more than a hint of Range Rover Evoque about it. There’s going to be a lot of double-takes from the pavement when one of these rolls by.
Inside, there are digital instruments, buried into the dashboard, while the big upright touchscreen looks a bit like the one in the Ford Explorer. It looks like practicality is a focus, with a big open area under the centre console and a wireless phone charger.
Like in the Jaecoo 7, that 12.3-inch touchscreen will essentially control everything about the car, as the Jaecoo 5 features hardly any physical buttons. The 7’s system is quite annoying to use, but thankfully both that and the 5 also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Jaecoo 5 has striking looks for a small car, yet the price tag is temptingly affordable
Space is fine, and there’s a useful 480-litre boot, which makes this one of the most practical small SUVs around. The Jaecoo 5 also comes with the company’s impressive seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
There are two versions of the Jaecoo 5 to choose from. Badged as Pure or Luxury, standard equipment includes the big screen, a six-speaker Sony sound system, and auto high-beam headlights. Luxury models add cooling for the wireless phone charger, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic glass roof with an opening sunroof section.
Power comes from a 1.6-litre petrol engine which develops 145hp, though there’s an all-electric version called Jaecoo E5 if that suits you better. The petrol engine drives the front wheels through a standard-fit seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it’s basically identical, mechanically speaking, to the Omoda 5.
We’ll update this review with our impressions once we’ve had the chance to drive it, but if you can’t wait that long you can get a great price with Carwow’s Jaecoo 5 deals as well as Jaecoo 5 lease deals. You can also browse used Jaecoos from our network of trusted dealers, and when the time comes to sell your car, Carwow can help with that, too.
How much is the Jaecoo 5?
The Jaecoo 5 has a RRP range of £24,505 to £28,000. Monthly payments start at £369.
Prices for the Jaecoo 5 start from just over £24,000, which means it’s affordable more than it is especially cheap. That’s about £2,000 less than a basic Ford Puma, though, and the Jaecoo is better-equipped as standard. The Volkswagen T-Cross is also more expensive, but its price is a little closer to that of the Jaecoo, while a basic Renault Captur is actually considerably cheaper than the 5, proving that the Chinese don’t have it all their own way when it comes to bargain motoring.
