Maxus vans overview

Maxus is a Chinese company, part of the massive SAIC group that also owns MG. Maxus started building vans when it purchased the remnants of LDV in 2010, with the Maxus name coming from the now-defunct LDV Maxus large panel van.

Now it sells a wide range of commercial vehicles worldwide, with the UK market getting a variety of diesel and electric pickup trucks and panel vans. These are among the cheapest on the market, and notably the brand has electric vehicles in all sizes - including the first electric pickup truck.

Buying used there’s a huge range of Maxus vehicles, some based on older LDV designs while others are newer and Maxus-specific.

FAQs

Maxus is a subsidiary of SAIC, China’s largest automaker and the same brand that owns MG.

Some are better than others - generally, they’re less refined and not as good to drive as their European counterparts, but Maxus vans make up for it by being much cheaper than the alternatives.

Maxus vans are made in China and exported worldwide.

Maxus vans are generally quite mechanically sound, and offer long warranties of five years or 125,000 miles. There tend to be more minor build quality issues than more sophisticated, more expensive vans, though, and parts supply can sometimes be patchy.

Maxus diesel vans typically use an SAIC-developed 2.0-litre diesel, while electric ones use SAIC’s own motors.

Maxus vans are built at vast scale by China’s largest vehicle manufacturer, meaning huge economies can be made. The vans themselves are often based on older designs, making R&D cheaper.

Maxus vehicles tend to be fairly mechanically sound, with problems more likely to involve electrical gremlins, flimsy interior trim, software glitches and noises and rattles.
