Car changing is a big deal
Here are the greatest hits of the Japanese brand that’s coming back to Britain next year
After almost five years out of the UK new car market, Mitsubishi will be back next summer.
Expect at least one fully electric car and a four-wheel-drive model when the new line-up reaches showrooms in 2026.
Meanwhile, we’ve been looking back at the five best cars Mitsubishi sold in the UK.
1. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
We could easily fill this top five with different versions of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, the road-going version of Mitsubishi’s all-conquering rally car. To give the rest of Mitsubishi’s back catalogue a look-in we’re treating the 10 generations as one car.

Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, rallying was a big deal and car enthusiasts were either Team Subaru or Team Mitsubishi. If you were a Mitsubishi fan, the Evo was probably your dream car. These turbocharged four-wheel-drive rocket ships were among the fastest and most high-tech cars of the era. Today, a well cared for example makes a brilliant used performance car, if a bit of a pricey one.
2. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
If your eyebrows are raised, hear us out. It may not be great to drive and the looks are anonymous, but the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV did more than any other model to make plug-in hybrids mainstream.

When it arrived in 2014, a real-world electric range of around 25 miles was a big deal. That might not seem like much compared with cars a decade newer, but it’s enough for many drivers to complete day-to-day journeys without exhaust emissions. The Outlander PHEV is very reliable, well equipped, and makes a good used buy.
3. Mitsubishi Shogun
If the Outlander PHEV shows Mitsubishi’s forward thinking, then the last Shogun to be sold in the UK (2012-2019) demonstrates the long-term evolution of an old-school 4×4.

Even by the standards of the time, the Shogun was not great to drive on the road. It’s ponderous and noisy. On the other hand, if you are shopping for a 4×4 because you need one rather than want one, a used Shogun is fantastic off road. It’s also massively practical and very durable.
4. Mitsubishi Galant VR4
Finding a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 in good condition is like reaching the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow – just 200 were officially imported. It’s worth the search, though.

Think of the Galant as a big brother to the Lancer Evo. Roomier, more practical, slightly more sensible, but still capable of serious pace. The clever torque-vectoring 4×4 system was state of the art a quarter of a century ago and still impresses today.
5. Mitsubishi 3000 GT
The Mitsubishi 3000 GT was an alternative to the Mazda RX-7 and Toyota Supra. As you’d expect of Mitsubishi, this stylish sports car was crammed with tech and sent power to all four wheels.

You won’t see many on the roads now, although they are not as rare as the Galant VR4. Many will have been modified – fine if that’s what you are into, but an original car makes a comfortable and fast GT car.
