News editor Jamie Edkins has been to the University of Coventry to see what its Automotive and Transport Design students think the future of motoring will look like, and it’s safe to say it’s an eclectic mix of cars.

Designing a car is a hugely complex process which takes years, as well as a lot of skill. I’m not blessed with such talent, but those who are can be found at the University of Coventry on its Automotive and Transport Design course.

Students spend three years learning all sorts of complex techniques, as well as studying the ways in which their designs impact users and creating modern solutions to transport problems. At the end of the course, they’ll have designed something truly unique.

I went along to the Graduate Festival public exhibition to check out the work of the people who could design your future car, and there was everything from small city runarounds to a Dacia designed for filming bears. No, really.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

MG EZ

Cars are getting really expensive these days, and running one as a university student can prove too costly for many. This is where the MG EZ comes in, an urban runaround designed by Alfie Lowe.

It’s aimed at students, and doubles as a relaxing space to hang out or study between classes. You can also rent one between a group of friends to spread the cost, and there’s plenty of storage for everyone’s kit and clobber.

Hyundai N-Vision Tourer

The Hyundai N Vision Tourer is designed by Sunu Chae as a pan-European GT car. You can see the influence from Hyundai’s N division in that front end, with the four-pixel motif across the front and the low, sloped bonnet line.

It looks as though it’d be just as at-home on a French Autoroute as it would be halfway up a ski slope in the Alps. Unlike current N models, which are focussed on hardcore performance over anything else, the N Vision Tourer balances long-distance comfort with agile handling.

Dacia URSUS

Taking a walk on the quirky side, this is the Dacia URSUS. It was dreamt up by Taehyeon Kang as a go-anywhere truck for documentary film crews to track bears in the Romanian Carpathians, although I imagine there could be many other use cases for a vehicle like this.

The completely flat bonnet acts as a perfect platform for a camera, or you could pitch a tent on it to keep yourself off the ground. Also, let’s face it, this thing just looks cool. I especially like the way the Dacia logo is discreetly integrated into the front fascia just above the lights.

Mazda RE500

The Mazda RE500, designed by Younghun Jeong, is a modern interpretation of the RX500 – a rotary-powered concept car from 1970 which was built to celebrate Mazda’s 50th anniversary.

Younghun went to great lengths to capture the spirit of the original RX500. The iconic silhouette remains pretty much the same, and the low-slung front end reminds me of the Iconic SP concept from a few years ago. Smaller details, like the exhaust outlets in the rear bumper and the simple black wheels, finish things off nicely.

EON Vision Lux

There’s more than a hint of BMW-ness to Xinrui Lui’s EON Vision Lux concept. That channel in the bonnet looks pretty similar to the new BMW i3, and the rear end reminds me a bit of the Concept Speedtop.

The interior, on the other hand, is nothing like any other car we’ve seen. Those slats across the dashboard look a bit like a pergola in a posh garden, and the massive wingback chairs are straight out of a sci-fi movie.
