Students from the University of Coventry’s Automotive and Transport Design course are given free reign to create the craziest concepts they can come up with, and news editor Jamie Edkins has picked five of the coolest.

Car designers working for mainstream manufacturers are usually constricted by quite a few factors. Each brand has its own design cues, safety regulations determine the placement of certain panels, and the accountants want to cut costs at every corner which curbs some of the crazier ideas.

But what happens when you let a designer come up with whatever they want, with no restrictions at all? Well students at the University of Coventry get just that opportunity on the Automotive and Transport Design course.

The final project on this three-year degree course is to create an entirely new automotive concept from scratch, and the level of creativity on display is something to behold. Here are five of the coolest final-year projects from the class of 2026.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Flux

The Flux is a two seater coupe, which is also a jacked-up off-roader and was inspired by squirrels. There’s a lot to unpack there, so let’s start with the coupe/off-roader bit.

@jefodesign

Charlie Jefferson designed this car “for the style-conscious adventurer”. It not only raises up to increase ground clearance on rough terrain, the body actually changes shape to keep the proportions looking svelte.

So where does the squirrel bit come in? Well, the arched roofline and athletic proportions were actually inspired by the way a squirrel jumps between trees. Sounds nuts to us.

Avant Apex-R

If you’re looking to start driving on track, actually getting out there and driving a car to its limits can be scary. That’s why Edward Hopkins has created the Avant Apex-R – a car which can take you from total novice to pro using an augmented-reality helmet.

@hopkins_auto

The car starts out as a simulator rig, allowing you to practice in the safety of your own garage without turning a wheel on track. As you progress, it then becomes a full-on race car which you can take on track days, and you still receive tuition using advanced software.

It can coach you on the move, as well as project directions onto the inside of your helmet – a bit like the guidance lines on a video game which tell you when to brake and accelerate.

Shift

Shift isn’t a car, it’s an interior concept designed by Julia Klimaszewske which is based around something called blind boxes. These boxes contain different dolls, each of which has a different character. You collect these dolls and put them on a pad in the car, and the interior then changes to a different theme depending which doll you pick.

@JuliaKlimaszewskaDesign

The surfaces in the car use e-ink technology, similar to the display on an e-reader, changing the colour and design to reflect different subcultures, seasons, trends and locations.

This is something which you could see on cars in the future, because it exists in a more basic capacity now. Some high-end models have the ability to set up different profiles based on who is driving the car, so Shift is just a much cleverer version of this.

Vess.l

Owning a boat is very expensive, and one of the most costly aspects is storing it when you’re not out on the open water. That’s why Kar Wai Wong designed the Vess.l – an amphibious car.

@kww467

Instead of faffing around with a boat, you just drive your car straight into the water when the mood takes you. This isn’t necessarily a new thing, but many amphibious cars look like boats with wheels. The Vess.l was designed to look more like a car which just happens to float.

It does still look pretty nautical though, and the revolving glass roof was actually inspired by a message in a bottle.

Pelagos

@torque_shogun

Keeping with the water theme, we’ll finish on the Pelagos by Seokmin Lee. This is a car which can also act as a personal submarine.

It looks totally bonkers, but essentially the car can split in half so you can deploy your own submersible to explore the depths of the ocean at your leisure. It’s a bit more advanced than James Bond’s Lotus Esprit, and it’ll certainly turn heads in any supermarket car park or local waterway.
