The latest model to enter a crowded city car market heads into the fight with value for money on its side

The latest city car from the Japanese brand will hit UK showrooms in February 2015 to rival the likes of the Volkswagen Up!/Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo and Renault Twingo.

Prices start at £7,999 for the SZ3 model, which features six airbags, air conditioning, alloy wheels, and a CD player with Bluetooth and USB connectivity all as standard. For an extra £1,000, the SZ4 model offers electric windows all-round, front fog lamps and a glitzier chrome grille. ESP is fitted as standard in both models.

The Celerio has a spacious cabin similar to the likes of the Citroen C1/Peugeot 108/Toyota Aygo trio, and a boot volume of 254 litres is comparable to the class above.

From launch, a 68hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine will be offered, returning a claimed 65.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. It may be worth waiting for the summer, however, when tweaks to the ignition system and the introduction of stop/start technology will improve those figures to 78.4mpg and 84g/km respectively. At the same time, an automatic gearbox option will be introduced.

In a line…

The Celerio doesn’t offer the style of some rivals, but the cheaper price and good standard equipment might be enough to sway some buyers.
