New range-topping GX5h and GX5hs versions of the Outlander PHEV add a little extra luxury to the hybrid SUV

Mitsubishi has today announced a pair of new top-spec trim levels for the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid SUV.

The PHEV continues to be a huge success for the brand. Thanks to competitive pricing and the promise of 156.9mpg, Mitsubishi shifted over 10,000 of them last year – vastly outselling electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf in the process.

These new variants aim the Outlander slightly further upmarket. Dubbed GX5h and GX5hs, the pair offer extra standard kit over the current range-topping GX4hs.

The most notable change comes inside, where new nappa leather upholstery can be chosen in a one of three colours: Claret Red, Porcelain Beige or Gunmetal Grey. Replacing the black trim of the GX4h, it is applied to the seats, door cards and handbrake. A 420-Watt Alpine premium audio system replaces the standard in-car setup, and has been optimised for the Outlander’s cabin acoustics.

Passengers in the rear can be kept comfortable in the winter courtesy of heated seats and in the summer by tinted privacy glass. Twin USB sockets in the rear allow for extra charging points for mobile devices, while LED mood lighting includes puddle lamps to make getting out of the car that little more graceful on a dark, rainy evening.

From the outside, the changes are more subtle. New Outlander badges sit on the bonnet, and exterior lights (for the headlights, foglights, number plates and charge point) are all LED items. The alloy wheels remain 18 inches in diameter, but the rear spoiler has been revised.

The GX5hs gains a number of safety features and gadgets over the GX5h, including forward collision mitigation system, lane departure warning and parking sensors front and rear.

Prices for the new models start at £38,399 for the GX5h and £40,499 for the GX5hs, each a £4,500 premium over the GX4h and GX4hs models. Order books for the pair are open now.
