Data from the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed the UK’s 10 best-selling new cars in October 2025, and the Jaecoo 7 is officially the most popular Chinese car on sale.

Uncertainty over this month’s Budget hasn’t held back car buyers, according to new figures from the SMMT. New car sales were up by 0.5% in October compared with the same month last year.

Battery electric vehicles are selling strongly, up by 23.6% to account for more than one-in-four cars sold. Hybrid cars also had a strong month, with plug-in hybrid sales climbing 27.2% and hybrids up by 2.1%. Electric cars and hybrids now account for just over half of new cars sold, with a 50.8% market share.

Here’s the top 10 in full:

1. Ford Puma

If you’ve driven one, it won’t be a surprise to see the Ford Puma at the top of the pile. Ford’s small SUV is great fun and looks eye-catching too.

It doesn’t hurt that the electric Puma Gen-E is one of the tiny number of cars eligible for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, making the EV version very competitive on price.

2. Kia Sportage

The Sportage ticks a lot of boxes. There’s a choice of petrol or hybrid power, plus the cabin is roomy and well made. Even the most basic models have plenty of standard kit.

It could be more fun to drive, though, and high-spec versions with large alloy wheels are quite stiff over bumps in the road.

3. Mini Cooper

There are more practical hatchbacks and no shortage of more affordable alternatives. That doesn’t stop the Mini Cooper from being the third best-selling car in Britain.

If the looks fail to put a smile on your face, the drive will. It’s a hoot from behind the wheel, even if it isn’t quite as engaging as older MINIs. The electric version has more character than most EVs but doesn’t go very far on a charge.

4. Volkswagen Golf

The most sensible of sensible choices, the Volkswagen Golf continues to be a favourite with the British car-buying public.

Today’s car is comfortable, loaded with high-tech features, and offers a choice of efficient engines. Some alternatives have more room, though, and others are more fun on a twisty road.

5. Nissan Juke

Love it or hate it, the Nissan Juke certainly stands out. Enough car buyers like the Nissan’s unique styling to secure fifth place in the latest SMMT sales charts.

You have to like the looks to forgive the Juke its cramped cabin, outdated infotainment and uncomfortable ride. The Juke does have lots of safety kit, though, and it’s keenly priced.

6. Jaecoo 7

From a standing start, the Chinese Jaecoo brand has quickly established a healthy market share. The Jaecoo 7 SUV is the company’s best-seller.

Although it’s not very good to drive, the Jaecoo is great value, packed with standard kit, and the hybrid model is fuel efficient. For many car buyers, the 7’s strengths clearly outweigh its weaknesses.

7. Nissan Qashqai

Nissan is one of just two car makers with a pair of models in the top 10. The Qashqai backs up the Juke by taking seventh spot.

It’s easy to see why – the Qashqai is a very capable all-rounder. The cabin is practical, the hybrid engine is excellent, and there’s lots of kit included in the price. A bit more fun for the driver would make a good car even better.

8. Volkswagen Tiguan

Go for the Tiguan if you are looking for a roomy SUV with an upmarket finish and a long list of toys included in the price. What’s more, the plug-in hybrids promise rock-bottom fuel bills if you can recharge at home.

Don’t choose the VW if you want an exciting drive, though, and be aware the price pitches the Tiguan uncomfortably close to more prestigious alternatives.

9. Vauxhall Corsa

Lots of small hatchbacks have gone to the great car showroom in the sky, victims of slim profit margins and the switch to electric power.

The Vauxhall Corsa isn’t quite the last small hatch standing, but it is the most popular of its shrinking peer group. Basic models are good value and the Corsa looks smart and drives well.

10. Audi A3

Okay, there are more affordable alternatives, but Audi A3 buyers are happy to spend a bit more for an Audi badge, excellent build quality, and handsome design.

The A3 drives well even if it’s not very exciting. You can buy more spacious cars for less if you can live without an upmarket name.
