Is the Porsche Cayenne Electric a good car?

The new, all-electric version of the Porsche Cayenne takes the sporty SUV’s classic recipe and tweaks it into an EV package . It combines a premium interior design with sleek styling and a desirable badge, but you’d expect more range from a car at this price level.

It’s Porsche’s second stab at an electric SUV, following on from the much smaller Macan Electric. As with the regular Macan, you can still buy a petrol-powered Cayenne, too. There aren’t all that many super-posh electric SUVs on sale, but you could consider the Cayenne Electric as an alternative to the brilliant BMW iX, sensible Volvo EX90 and the minimalist Polestar 3.

It may be an all-new recipe for the Cayenne, but there’s no denying the Porsche DNA in its styling. Where the BMW iX and Polestar 3 feature a lot of straight, crisp lines, the Cayenne Electric is altogether more curvaceous, with its rounded window line and bulging wheel arches. Porsche has also avoided the temptation to use split-level headlights, which means the SUV looks neat and tidy from the front.

Porsche Cayenne Electric: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 383 - 403 miles
Efficiency: 2.8 - 3.2 miles per kWh
Battery size: 113kWh
Max charge speed: 390kW
Charge time AC: 11hrs, 0-100%, 11kw
Charge time DC: 26mins, 10-80%, 390kw
Charge port location: Left side rear, right side rear
Power outputs: 435hp - 1142hp (with overboost engaged)

The interior is a more radical departure from the Porsche norm, featuring a 12.3-inch, curved infotainment display in the middle of the dashboard, merging into the centre console. In front of the driver is a 14.3-inch instrument screen, while an optional 14.9-inch unit is available for your passenger. There’s also a new piece of tech: optional augmented reality software in the head-up display.

Porsche purists might well despair at this less-than-traditional approach to the Cayenne Electric’s interior styling (we’re still not over the loss of the twisty start key), but if the current Panamera and Taycan are any indication, the infotainment tech will be fantastic to use.

Again, if the Taycan and Macan Electric are clues as to what the Cayenne will offer, you’ll be able to drop the seat nice and low for a properly sporty driving position. In classic Porsche fashion, ‘comfort’ seats come as standard, and you can opt for more heavily bolstered, even-more-adjustable sports seats instead. ISOFIX comes as standard in the outer rear seats, but it’s a bit cheeky that you have to pay an extra £50 to get them in the front, too.

I like the Cayenne as a model, in fact I own an older one, so I’m excited to see if the Electric version is as good to drive

The Porsche has a massive boot. With the seat backs set upright you get a mighty 781 litres to fill, ahead of the BMW iX at 500 litres. Even the massive Volvo EX90 only offers 655 litres in five-seater mode, while the Cayenne Electric also features a 90-litre front boot.

You have the choice of three power outputs in the Cayenne Electric. In basic trim it has 435hp, while the Cayenne S has 656hp and the ballistic Cayenne Turbo produces 1,140hp - all with launch control and the overboost function engaged. Range varies from 383 miles in the Turbo to 403 miles in the S, but given the whopping 113kWh battery, you’d hope for more.

How much is the Porsche Cayenne Electric?

The Porsche Cayenne Electric range kicks off at just over £83,000, which is £8,000 more than a BMW iX and £10,000 more than a Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 - though the latter two start out in rear-wheel drive trim. Step up to all-wheel drive in the Swedes and the gap closes to about £4,000.

Still, you can argue that the Cayenne Electric is worth the extra on badge pedigree alone. It’s also very well equipped as standard with matrix LED lights, a beefy sound system, front seat and steering wheel heating as well as keyless entry-and-go and soft-close doors. Very fancy.
