Actually an Audi Q5 under the skin, but you’d never know it from the way the Macan tackles corners. You can find relatively affordable 2.0-litre models which make for classy family transport, or exceptionally quick Turbo versions which provide some serious driving thrills.

Do used Porsches hold their value?

Not from new, at least not unless we’re talking about a rare, limited-edition Porsche such as a 911 GT3 RS or S/T model. Most Porsches, like all cars, will decrease in value once purchased, although some Porsche models — the Panamera for instance — have been known to hold on to as much as 63% of their original value after three years, which is way above the market average.

Is an old Porsche a good investment?

It will depend very much on the model — 911s are inevitably the most sought-after — and the specification. Generally, after enough time, all old Porsches start to rise in value. It’s even happening with the unloved-at-the-time ‘996’ version of the 911 from the early 2000s. Original Boxster values have arguably bottomed out, too. However, if it’s investment you’re after, spend your money on a sympathetically specified classic, and then look after it as if it were made out of glass.
