Used Polestar cars overview

Polestar is a relatively new name in the used car market. A Volvo spin-off owned by Volvo Cars and Geely, Polestar exclusively makes electric cars—except for its first model.

Originally a racing team and later Volvo’s performance sub-brand, Polestar has speed in its DNA. Even entry-level models are quick, but Twin Motor versions offer four-wheel drive and blistering acceleration.

The first model, Polestar 1, was a rare, high-performance hybrid, only sold in left-hand drive. The Polestar 2, launched in 2020, became a strong Tesla Model 3 rival. A 2023 update improved handling by switching entry-level versions from front- to rear-wheel drive.

Polestar has since introduced the 3 and 4 SUVs, alternatives to the BMW iX and Tesla Model Y. Every Polestar is stylish, with high-quality cabins that outshine Tesla’s interiors.

Early Polestar 2 models had a firm ride, now improved. Also, Polestars can't fully access Tesla’s Supercharger network, a key Tesla advantage. However, strong reliability and high owner satisfaction make Polestar a solid EV choice.

Popular used Polestar models

The Polestar range offers stylish and good-looking EVs that make compelling alternatives to a similar Tesla.

Used Polestar 2

This is the core of the Polestar range, and the model you are most likely to see advertised for sale on the used market. It’s quick, good-looking and very well made. Some alternatives have more rear-seat space, however, and the ride is firm – especially if you shop for one of the earliest cars.

Used Polestar 3

A big electric SUV, the Polestar 3 is an alternative to the Audi Q8 e-tron and BMW iX. The 3 is relaxing to drive and very roomy for passengers. More boot space would be welcome, though, and the infotainment system is fiddly.

Used Polestar 4

Polestar has decided the 4 doesn’t need a rear windscreen (there’s a rear-view camera instead). Aside from this gimmick, the 4 is a very good car. The Twin Motor models are obscenely quick, the cabin is beautifully made, and all versions have a usefully long range.

FAQs

If you want an EV but don’t intend to follow the herd and run a Tesla, then a used Polestar should be on your shortlist. These are very good cars, especially the facelifted Polestar 2.

Not all used electric cars hold their value well. So far, Polestar seems to be an exception, with reasonably strong used car prices for these premium EVs.
