Used SsangYong cars overview

Ssangyong – now known as KGM Motors – has a reputation for building simple, tough, even crude, but no-nonsense 4x4s and SUVs, beloved of farmers and hard-working country types. This ruggedness makes them a tempting second hand buy, but beware of turbo and fuel system issues with the diesel engines.

Popular used SsangYong models

The Ssangyong lineup has always, and only, consisted of SUVs and pickups — no hatchbacks nor coupes here.

Used SsangYong Korando

The Korando is a mid-sized SUV, roughly comparable to a Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage. As is the Ssangyong way, it’s not as sophisticated as those two, and somewhat built-down to a price. However, reliability is good — just watch for oil levels and off-road damage — and the Korando has a noticeably big and useful boot.

Used SsangYong Tivoli

The Tivoli has been around since 2015, and the good news is that it’s generally considered to be a very reliable car, with the only major concern being the DPF filter on diesel models, which needs regular motorway runs so that it doesn’t clog up. The Tivoli is pretty cheap inside, and not much good to drive, but it’s cheap and rugged.

Used SsangYong Rexton

The Rexton is the biggest of the Ssangyong lineup, and it’s a proper old-school 4x4, in the style of the old Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun. That means it’s great off-road, and the Rexton has good reliability too. However, it’s crude and noisy to drive on the road, and you’ll need to watch for models that have been bashed about off-road.

FAQs

Yes, as long as you know what you’re getting into. Ssangyongs are generally much less refined and not as good to drive as most of their mainstream competition, but they’re also usually rugged and useful, and often very good off-road.

Generally speaking, yes — Ssangyong makes reliable cars, and it has backed that up with a standard five-year warranty.
