Used Lamborghini cars overview

Lamborghini is, of course, famous for being a great Italian rival to Ferrari, but whereas Ferrari has always seemed the more serious, motorsport-focused company, Lamborghini has a more playful, fun-loving streak.

That’s reflected in the cars, from the beautiful 1960s Miura to the wild 1980s Countach and the dramatic 1990s Diablo. Essentially, though, there are two Lamborghinis — there’s the company formed by a wealthy tractor manufacturer in the 1960s (Ferruccio Lamborghini, who allegedly started the company because he hated the way Ferrari treated him as a customer) and the Lamborghini we’ve had since 1998 when Audi took control.

Since then, Lamborghini’s cars have been better-built and more reliable, not to mention faster and more technologically advanced (there’s far less difference between a 1990s Diablo and a 1970s Countach than there is between the Diablo and the current Revuelto). The ‘modern’ Lambo is probably best seen in the Gallardo, a mid-engined sports car, related to the Audi R8, built between 2003 and 2013, which is dramatic to look at and blisteringly quick, but easy to drive and day-to-day useable.

However, reliability — while better these days — is still not a strong suit. Beware of problems with the paddle-shift gearboxes, the electrical and electronic systems, overheating, oil leaks, brake issues, and suspension problems. As with any exotic sports car, there’s no way to run a Lamborghini on the cheap…

FAQs

Early Gallardos are now dropping below the £60,000 mark, but buy carefully and insist on a full service history, either from a Lamborghini dealer or an independent marque specialist.

There’s certainly more risk involved in buying a used Lamborghini than, say, a used Toyota Corolla, but then that’s kind of the point. Lamborghinis are fast, fun, and dramatic — almost cartoonish, sometimes — to look at. They’re also incredibly expensive to service and repair, so bear that in mind, but more recent models such as the Gallardo and Huracan are slightly easier to look after, and better-built in the first place.
