Is the Polestar 4 SUV a good car?
The new Polestar 4 SUV takes the stylish electric car’s classy interior and generous passenger space, and adds on something you’d never have imagined would be a headline feature - a proper rear window. The more practical rear end addresses one of the biggest complaints with the original Polestar 4, though some alternatives do still travel further between chargers.
It’s rather like a fashion designer finally giving in and putting proper pockets in a pair of trousers. It still looks good, but the manufacturer has acknowledged that their product needs to operate in the real world, too.
The Polestar 4 SUV is more like a jacked-up electric estate car, but it should still be a strong alternative to proper SUVs such as the BMW iX3, Porsche Macan Electric and Tesla Model Y.
From the front, there’s little to distinguish the Polestar 4 SUV from the coupe, as it has the same sharp lights and low nose. The difference comes further back, where there’s a longer roofline, a squarer rear end and - yes - a real back window, instead of just a blank panel. A sizeable roof spoiler conceals the rear wiper and camera.
Polestar 4 SUV: electric range, battery and charging data
Range: 373–391 miles
Efficiency: 2.9–3.5 miles per kWh
Battery size: 100kWh
Max charge speed: 200kW
Charge time AC: 11 hours (0–100%, 11kW)
Charge time DC: 30 minutes (10–80%, 200kW)
Charge port location: Rear left
Power outputs: 272hp / 544hp
The rear window means you can use a conventional rear-view mirror, though there’s a digital version still available for when you have a boot full of luggage. The 530-litre boot is only four litres larger than the coupe’s, but the squarer shape should make carrying bulky luggage - or a dog - considerably easier. It’s also on a par with the BMW iX3 or Audi Q6 e-tron for space. The front boot is a puny 15 litres, though, which is barely enough for a charging cable.
Rear passengers fare really well, with space for six-footers to stretch out and more headroom than in the regular Polestar 4.
It’s unchanged from the coupe up front, too, which is good news - it means you get a solidly built and rather handsome interior, with interesting material choices and a bit more personality than the staid interior of a Q6 e-tron or Porsche Macan EV. The central touchscreen is particularly good, thanks to its crisp graphics, quick responses and easy-to-grasp Android operating system.
There’s a dearth of physical switchgear, though, which is less than ideal - we found the Polestar 4 coupe’s screen to be a bit distracting for adjusting certain functions on the move.
You can get two power outputs, and both versions use a massive 100kWh battery. The basic Rear Motor model has the most official range, at 391 miles, while the high-performance Dual Motor car claims 373 miles. That’s not bad, but it’s bested by the BMW iX3, Volvo EX60 and Mercedes GLC Electric.
Adding a rear window makes the Polestar 4 SUV more conventional than the coupe - and better
Charging speeds can’t top those cars either, with a 200kW maximum giving you a 10-80% charge of around 30 minutes.
Our experience driving the Polestar 4 Coupe suggests the SUV model should be comfortable and smooth, with plenty of power - but not much fun on a twisty road. The Porsche Macan will likely remain the keen drivers’ choice, but the Polestar should be excellent for long-distance cruising.

The Polestar 4 SUV starts at around £55,000 for the Rear Motor model, rising to roughly £61,000 for the Dual Motor. That’s a bit above the BMW iX3 but comfortably less than the Porsche Macan Electric.
Polestar offers equipment packs rather than trim levels. As standard you get 20-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control and wireless phone charging.
The ‘Business’ pack adds additional driving assistance, posher front seats and a heated steering wheel, while ‘Prime’ has all of this plus a Harman Kardon stereo, head-up display, Matrix LED headlights and electric rear seats.
The Dual Motor model also has an optional Performance pack, with 22-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, adjustable suspension, gold exterior detailing and Nappa leather seats with ventilation and massage functions.
