About Polestar

Polestar is a young company, but the name goes back further than you might think.

While Polestar the car maker was founded in 2017, the Polestar racing team and tuning brand goes back to 1996. In 2009, Polestar became a partner company of Volvo, producing high-performance versions of existing Volvo models, before being bought by Volvo in 2015.

Just a couple of years later Volvo (along with parent company, Geely) announced that Polestar would become a car maker in its own right, focusing on electric cars. The first model, the imaginatively named Polestar 1, was a plug-in hybrid, but every car since has been a pure EV. The Polestar 2, 3 and 4 all make very capable alternatives to https://www.carwow.co.uk/polestar/1, as well as electric cars from long-established car makers.

Polestar likes to do things a bit differently from many car manufacturers, showcasing its vehicles in Polestar ‘spaces’ rather than traditional dealerships. It’s big on online ordering and home delivery, too.

What our car expert says

“The Polestar 2 shows what this car maker is capable of. It’s brilliant in many ways, with great looks, a long range, and a high-quality cabin. Still want that Tesla?”

Polestar FAQs

Polestar has been spun off from Volvo. Volvo is owned by the Chinese car company, Geely, so Polestar is part-Swedish, part-Chinese.
Although Polestar’s headquarters is in Torslanda, Sweden, it has manufacturing facilities all over the world. Polestar cars are made in China, South Korea, and the US.
Yes, Polestar cars are good, and they keep getting better. When the Polestar 2 was facelifted the company made several improvements, and the car has a wowscore of 8/10. The Polestar 3 and 4 look to build on that success.
There isn’t as much data to go on with Polestar as with other longer-established brands. But so far, the signs are good. The 2 has scored respectably in reliability surveys. What’s more, electric cars are usually more reliable than petrols and diesels as they have fewer moving parts to go wrong.
Yes, Polestar is owned by Volvo. The parent company of Volvo and Polestar is the Chinese car giant, Geely.
