About MG cars

MG - standing for Morris Garages - can trace its history back to the 1920s, when it started life as a British marque. Merging first with Austin, then British Leyland, MG formed a reputation for offering desirable, sporty cars for those on a tight budget. But during the 2000s, while it was part of the MG Rover Group, its fortunes went downhill, and eventually went into receivership in 2005.

The MG name was then purchased by the Chinese Nanjing Automobile Group - part of Chinese state-owned manufacturer SAIC - and in 2011 started selling cars in the UK once more. The new generation of MG cars were designed in both China and the UK, and targeted the very budget end of the UK car market.

After a few years producing generally acceptable but far from desirable models, MG’s really hit its stride of late and its new models are much easier to recommend. The MG4 electric car in particular was shortlisted for three Carwow Car of the Year awards, reflecting its impressive performance and rock-bottom price tag.

And with a whole swathe of new models on the horizon, all promising high-end performance without the associated cost, MG’s one of the more exciting brands to follow right now. Buyers are certainly eating it up - MG now sells more cars in the UK than big hitters like Land Rover, Citroen or Skoda.

What our car expert says

“A few years ago I’d only recommend somebody buy an MG if they couldn’t afford anything else - but that’s not the case anymore, and the latest MGs aren’t just good value, they’re good cars full stop. Proof if you needed it that even when it comes to cars you can sometimes get more than you pay for”

MG cars FAQs

MG stands for Morris Garages. The brand’s first cars sprung from a Morris sales and service centre in Oxford, where the business manager began a sideline modifying Morris cars to be sportier.
From 2011-2016, MG built some of its cars in the UK, but now the UK is only used for development and design purposes. MG cars are now built at parent company SAIC’s plant in China for the UK market.
MG cars are owned by SAIC Motor, or Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation. It’s a Chinese state-owned car manufacturer, one of the largest in the world, and in the UK sells MG cars as well as Maxus commercial vehicles.
MG finished last out of all UK car manufacturers in the 2023 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, with a shocking 33% of owners reporting an issue with their car in the first year of ownership. That’s far from ideal, though a generously long warranty should make sorting issues easier.
MG being a Chinese brand has a number of advantages when it comes to bringing cost down. First, there’s the sheer economics of scale involved in being one of the largest car manufacturers in China. Chinese labour is also generally cheaper than European labour, and the Chinese government backs parent company SAIC with subsidies too.
MG’s vehicle lineup is improving all the time. While some of its older models like the ZS or MG5 EV do feel antiquated next to newer alternatives, more recent additions like the MG4 EV and MG3 hybrid are genuinely excellent - without caveats.
