Is the MG IM6 a good car?

The MG IM6 is an electric car with SUV-like proportions but a sloping roofline to mimic a coupe’s sleek looks. There’s loads of space inside and it feels pretty posh for the cash, but the infotainment is a pain to use.

If you’re considering the MG IM6, the most obvious alternative is the excellent Tesla Model Y, but it’s also worth taking a look at the Audi Q4 e-tron or Kia EV6.

With all its technology and sleek looks, the MG IM6 is a bit like looking for a replacement for your Apple Watch and realising the Huawei Watch does pretty much the same thing, but you won’t feel like you’re following the crowd.

The MG IM6 certainly looks smart, with its sleek, smart lines being the complete opposite of the Tesla Model Y’s sharp, futuristic look.

MG IM6: electric range, battery and charging data

Range: 313-388 miles
Efficiency: 2.6-3.4 miles per kWh
Battery size: 96.5 kWh
Max charge speed: 396kW
Charge time AC: 13hrs
Charge time DC: 17 mins
Charge port location: Left rear
Power output: 407-751bhp

Inside it’s a rather simple design with the swoopy lines continuing from the exterior, while the view forward is dominated by displays. The main one is a massive 26.3-inch ultra-widescreen setup that runs from the centre of the dashboard and incorporates both infotainment and your driving information. Then there’s another display lower down by your left hand.

It’s all very smart and menus load quickly, but navigating through the various screens is really confusing. The fact that everything is routed through this system means you’re regularly fiddling around having to take your eyes off the road even for simple functions.

Cabin practicality could be better – there’s a large space beneath the armrest but otherwise cubby holes are a bit limited. And again, there’s loads of space in the back – which makes it ideal for child seats – but with the high floor there’s minimal under-thigh support, which will get tiring on long trips.

At 665 litres the boot is huge and should swallow everything a family needs for a weekend away, even if the Tesla Model Y has a bigger capacity. The Audi Q4 e-tron and Kia EV6 boots are much smaller.

Loads of space, a long range and fast charging make the MG IM6 a great option for high mileage drivers

Battery and charging technology is particularly impressive. The Long Range model is the pick of the lineup, with an official range of up to 388 miles – precisely one mile more than the Tesla Model Y equivalent – but all versions get ultra-fast public charging. You’ll get from 10-80% in less than 20 minutes, officially.

We tested the Performance version, which has a frankly ridiculous 751hp. It doesn’t feel quite as ferocious under acceleration as the smaller MG IM5 saloon, but it will still pin you back in your seat when you put your foot down.

When you’re not channeling your inner hooligan the IM6 is a relaxing thing to pootle around in. The suspension never quite settles on rough roads, but generally speaking it deals with bumps a bit better than the Model Y. Couple this with the long range and fast charging and the IM6 is a tempting option for anyone who drives a lot of miles but wants an electric car.

How much is the MG IM6?

The MG IM6 has a RRP range of £47,995 to £52,995. However, with Carwow you can save on average £8,000. Prices start at £39,995 if paying cash. Monthly payments start at £439. The price of a used MG IM6 on Carwow starts at £47,990.

Our most popular versions of the MG IM6 are:

Model version Carwow price from
300kW Long Range 100kWh 5dr Auto £39,995 Compare offers
553kW Launch Edition 100kWh 5dr AWD Auto £44,995 Compare offers
553kW Performance 100kWh 5dr AWD Auto £42,995 Compare offers

The MG IM6 represents really good value for money. It’s a fiver under £48,000 for the Long Range version, and less than £51,000 for the crazy-fast Performance one. That makes it a touch more expensive than the Tesla Model Y, which has very similar range figures, but doesn’t have the MG’s fast-charging capabilities. The Audi Q4 e-tron is a similar price to the IM6 but it’s smaller and doesn’t go as far on a charge.

Specifications are near-enough identical between the Long Range and Performance models, so the only choice you have to make is whether you want to pay extra for the fastest version. Standard kit includes adaptive cruise control, LED headlights front and rear, and artificial leather upholstery. The only difference is that Long Range models get 20-inch wheels, while Performance cars get 21 inches.

MG IM6 FAQs

The MG IM6 has 161mm of ground clearance which is useful if you need to tackle the occasional unmade road, but it’s not enough to turn it into a proper 4x4 so be careful how far you push it.

Quite apart from its sensational acceleration, the MG IM6 Performance has a top speed of 149mph, notably high for an EV.

The top-spec MG IM6 Performance model has a huge 751hp from its twin-motor layout, but even the standard long-range version isn’t disgraced with 407hp, which is enough to give it a very quick 5.4 second 0-62mph time.
