Car changing is a big deal
The Tesla Model 3 is a brilliant car, but for the same price you could get one of these awesome EVs on the second-hand market.
If you’re after a great-value new electric car, the Tesla Model 3 is hard to beat. For £40,000 you get an impressive 344 miles of range, a powerful 245hp motor, loads of tech and a practical interior.
For that sort of money you could have a high-spec version of the much smaller Peugeot e-308, the rather unremarkable Honda e:Ny1 or the truly woeful Skywell BE11. In this company, the Model 3 starts to look like a no-brainer.
But if you really want the best value for money, you might want to consider buying a used electric car. Buying something pre-loved means that the original owner has already taken the biggest depreciation hit for you, saving you thousands simply by getting something which is a few years old.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
So what used EVs could you buy for the same price as a Tesla Model 3? Well here are five great examples.
- BMW iX
- Porsche Taycan
- Kia EV6 GT
- Tesla Model Y Performance
- Audi e-tron GT
1. BMW iX

The Tesla Model 3 may be pretty comfy, but it’s got nothing on the BMW iX. This flagship German SUV glides down the road, and it has a gorgeous interior as well. We found a 2022 example with 13,700 miles on the clock for just over £37,000, which is less than half what it cost when new. The styling may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s easy to forgive when you get this level of tech.
2. Porsche Taycan

If you’re a keen petrolhead looking to switch to an EV, but don’t want to sacrifice on fun, check out the Porsche Taycan. We found a 2022 Taycan 4S for £40,000 with a whopping 530hp, and it’ll do 0-60mph in 4.0 seconds. It’s a hoot to drive, if not quite as practical as the Model 3, and it’s over £50,000 cheaper than it was when new.
3. Kia EV6 GT

A Tesla Model 3 Performance is blisteringly fast, but that version costs £60,000. The Kia EV6 GT offers similar thrills for the same price as a basic Model 3 – a 2024 example with under 10,000 miles on it can be yours for £40,000. It has 577hp, accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds and has a lovely, tech-filled interior. It’s just a shame that the boot isn’t massive.
4. Tesla Model Y Performance

For your £40,000 you could buy the Model 3’s larger, sportier stablemate: the Tesla Model Y Performance. It’s got a massive boot, similar tech to the Model 3 and it’ll do 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. For under £35,000 you can have a 2023 Model Y performance with just over 12,000 miles on the clock. That’s £25,000 less than it cost when new.
5. Audi e-tron GT

Fancy living out your Iron Man fantasy? Well the Audi e-tron GT made its debut in The Avengers, driven by Robert Downey Junior himself. It looks fantastic, has a lovely interior and it’s fast as well, and £40,000 will get you behind the wheel of a 2022 example with 530hp. That’s less than half price compared to new, although you will have to put up with limited range compared to the Model 3.
