Is the Audi A6 Allroad a good car?

The Audi A6 Allroad is what happens when you want the space and road manners of a big estate car, but occasionally need to cross a muddy field or reach a holiday cottage at the end of a rutted track. It takes the regular Audi A6 Avant, raises its suspension and adds four-wheel drive, chunky body cladding and a broader stance.

It’s like an A6 Avant wearing not just welly boots, but one of those bulky tactical jackets to make itself look even butcher.

It’s now in its fifth generation and is bigger than before. It’s a substantial car, over 10cm wider than the normal A6 Avant. It also sits higher and gets black wheelarch extensions, underbody protection and 19-inch alloy wheels helping it look more rugged. Wheels up to 21 inches are available.

The interior is shared with the latest A6, so a curved display panel combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument screen with a 14.5-inch central touchscreen. A separate 10.9-inch passenger display is optional, while the infotainment system includes smartphone connectivity and an integrated app store.

There should be plenty of passenger space, but the A6 Allroad isn’t quite as practical as its enormous exterior suggests. The diesel has a 466-litre boot, expanding to 1,497 litres with the rear seats folded. The plug-in hybrid falls to 404 litres and 1,423 litres respectively because some of its electrical hardware sits beneath the luggage area. There are no equivalent off-road estate cars offered any more, but the BMW 5 Series Touring and Mercedes E-Class Estate have 570 and 640 litres respectively.

Two engines will be offered. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel produces 299hp with mild hybrid assistance helping it from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds. The A6 Allroad e-hybrid combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 367hp, although it is fractionally slower to 62mph at 5.5 seconds. Its large battery provides up to 59 miles of electric range and takes around two and a half hours to charge from an 11kW supply.

The pumped-up bodywork and raised ride height makes the A6 Allroad look properly mean - I love it - it it should, for the price

Both versions have quattro four-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension as standard. Off-road modes can raise the suspension for better off-road ground clearance, while all-wheel steering is standard on the plug-in hybrid and optional on the diesel.

We’ve not driven the new A6 Allroad yet, but experience with the closely related A6 Avant and the previous Allroad means you can expect it to be quiet, comfortable and reassuring on a long journey, while remaining easier to drive than a similarly sized SUV. Its extra height and huge width may make it feel less wieldy around town, though.

The A6 Allroad looks like an appealingly old-school alternative to a luxury SUV, especially with its powerful diesel engine, useful off-road ability and adventurous styling. Whether that specialised combination is worth more than £70,000 is another matter.

How much is the Audi A6 Allroad?

The Audi A6 Allroad starts at £70,495 with the 299hp 3.0-litre diesel engine. The 367hp A6 Allroad e-hybrid costs from £72,920.

That makes the cheapest A6 Allroad £15,660 more expensive than the entry-level A6 Avant, although the Allroad comes with a much more powerful engine, quattro four-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension as standard. Audi hasn’t published the full trim structure just yet.
