This car is affordable and decently practical

The BYD Seal U is well worth your consideration, thanks to its generous standard equipment and appealing price. This plug-in hybrid SUV has a smart dashboard design, with neatly incorporated air vents and a 15.6-inch touchscreen taking centre stage. It’s sharp and quick to respond, although the menu structure takes some getting used to.

It also offers plenty of space. Six-foot-tall adults will have no problem getting comfortable in any seat. The 425-litre boot is wide and deep, but relatively shallow from floor to cover, and its overall capacity is smaller than those of the Seal U’s main alternatives.

I do, however, think its 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid system is the best part of the car. It’s efficient and gives you plenty of flexibility on longer journeys. That said, the Seal U struggles to settle down around town. It becomes calmer on the motorway, but dips and crests still make it feel unsettled at speed. There’s also excessive body lean on twisty country roads.
