Used Volkswagen Golf GTI 50 alternatives: hot hatches for half the price

July 06, 2026 by

When I drove the new Volkswagen Golf GTI 50 earlier this year, it left me speechless. The standard Golf GTI is fairly dull by hot hatch standards, but with a few suspension tweaks and some more power VW has turned it into a proper track weapon.

It’s a riot to drive, while being almost as comfy as a normal Golf, but this comes at a price. By the time you’ve added some options, the Golf GTI 50 will cost you over £50,000.

Not many people have that sort of money to spend on a hot hatch – I know I don’t – but the good news is that you don’t have to. The used market is full of sporty, fun family cars for half the price of a GTI 50, and these are five of my favourites.

  1. Hyundai i30 N
  2. Toyota GR Yaris
  3. Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport
  4. Honda Civic Type R
  5. BMW M140i

1. Hyundai i30 N

When Hyundai first said it was making a hot hatch back in 2017, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s a brand known for making dull-but-worthy family cars, so imagine my surprise when the i30 N turned out to be one of the most fun family cars on sale at the time.

It handles beautifully, while still being just as practical as a standard i30. I found a 2021 i30 N with 42,000 miles on the clock for £24,995, and while it’s not as comfortable or posh-feeling as a Golf GTI, it’s a hugely capable hot hatch for the money.

2. Toyota GR Yaris

A new Toyota GR Yaris will cost you almost £60,000 these days, but used examples are starting to look a lot more tempting. I found one from 2020 which has the desirable Circuit Pack, adding a limited-slip differential and tuned suspension for better handling, listed for just under £25,000.

It may not be the best hot hatch for families, with no rear doors and limited legroom, but if you want a hot hatchback for all weather conditions, this is it. The rally-bred four-wheel drive system gives it loads of grip, and the 257hp three-cylinder engine is great fun when you rev it out.

3. Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport

If you’ve got your heart set on the Golf, you could consider a used GTI Clubsport instead of the GTI 50. I managed to find a few examples from 2023 for £25,000 or less, and it offers most of the same suspension upgrades as the GTI 50.

It’s down on power, with 245hp on tap instead of 325hp, but it’s still plenty fast enough and it’s fun to drive on a twisty road. You will have to put up with the annoying touch-sensitive steering wheel controls though, whereas the latest car has scrapped them in favour of proper buttons.

4. Honda Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R is one of the most iconic hot hatches around, and now that it’s been discontinued it could be the perfect time to pick one up before prices start to skyrocket. I found a 2017 example with 64,000 miles on the clock for £23,995, which is around £10,000 less than it cost when new.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine is paired to a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, and the Civic is even better on a twisty road than the Golf GTI 50. It’s not as comfortable though, and the garish, shouty styling won’t appeal to everyone.

5. BMW M140i

The BMW M140i is essentially a full-on sports car in a practical hatchback body. It’s the only car on this list with rear-wheel drive, meaning you can enjoy some tail-out action on the track, and it also has a 3.0-litre straight-six engine which sounds great.

The tight rear legroom and small boot make it less practical than the Golf, and it’s quite thirsty as well, but prices start from as low as £18,000 for a 2017 car. At that price, I reckon it’s a bit of a bargain.
