Chinese alternatives to the UK’s best-selling family SUV: the Kia Sportage
June 04, 2026 by Jamie Edkins
There are dozens of family SUVs on sale right now, and the most popular is the Kia Sportage. It’s a practical, well-made and comfortable car with a seven-year warranty and plenty of tech, so it’s no wonder it’s so popular.
However, for the last few months there has been a newcomer from China fighting for its crown, and there are many more which are well worth considering. Here are five of the best Chinese alternatives to the Kia Sportage for you to consider.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
- Jaecoo 7
- Omoda 7
- Chery Tiggo 7
- Geely Starray
- MG HS
1. Jaecoo 7
The Jaecoo 7 has been fighting the Sportage for the title of most popular family SUV for the last few months. In 2026 so far, there are only a few hundred registrations in it. That’s hugely impressive for a brand which has only been around for a couple of years.
It’s well-made inside, practical and very well-equipped. The Jaecoo also comes with excellent hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines, but the basic petrol engine is best avoided because it’s noisy and thirsty. It’s around £2,000 cheaper than a Kia Sportage
2. Omoda 7

Under the skin, the Omoda 7 is very similar to the Jaecoo 7. Both cars come from Chery International, and therefore they have the same plug-in hybrid engine. However, the Omoda is nicer to drive than the Jaecoo thanks to improved suspension and steering.
The infotainment system is a bit fiddly to use, and we’re not sure about the strange-feeling leatherette used in the cabin, but the Omoda 7 still feels high quality and it comes with loads of kit as standard. Prices start from just over £30,000, making it a few grand cheaper than a hybrid Kia Sportage.
3. Chery Tiggo 7

The final car from the Chery International trio is the Chery Tiggo 7, and this car stands out for its insane price tag. It starts from just under £25,000, more than £6,000 less than the Sportage, and through Carwow you can get one for as little as £23,000 at the time of writing.
For an extra £3,000 you can get the top-spec model, with luxuries such as heated and ventilated front seats, a surround-view camera and a power tailgate. It may not be as nice to drive as the Kia, but you can’t argue with the value for money.
4. Geely Starray

The Geely Starray is a great option if you want something which feels super-posh inside, because the interior quality is much higher than its £30,000 price tag suggests. It’s also spacious inside, and the plug-in hybrid engine can do up to 80 miles on electric power alone.
The infotainment system is a faff to use, which is a shame because everything is controlled through it. It’s also pretty dull to drive, but it’s more comfortable than the fidgety Jaecoo 7.
5. MG HS

Company car drivers looking for the lowest tax rates will want to check out the MG HS, because the 75-mile electric range from the PHEV puts it into the 5% Benefit in Kind bracket. This will make it a good few hundred pounds a month cheaper than the equivalent Sportage.
The HS is also roomy inside, well-equipped and posher than you might think. That said, the Sportage is more comfortable over bumps, and the MG’s infotainment system is fiddly. Prices start from around £26,500, and you can save an average of over £5,000 on an MG HS through Carwow at the time of writing.
