DIY car care: easy checks to keep your car running smoothly

June 03, 2026 by

Basic car maintenance checks only take a few minutes, and anyone can master them with minimal effort. Here are six essential checks you can do entirely yourself.

So, you’ve just bought or leased a new car, but when it comes to maintenance, you’re not exactly a car expert. That’s fine, but you don’t need to be a mechanic to perform basic checks which keep your car running smoothly.

To help you out, here are six easy car maintenance checks you can do yourself, with no professional help needed.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

1. Checking your oil protects your engine

Your engine oil lubricates moving parts and prevents excessive wear. Running low on oil can cause severe engine damage and lead to costly repairs.

To check it, park your car on a flat surface and wait until the engine is cold. Open the bonnet and locate the dipstick – it’s usually got a coloured handle on top. Pull it out, wipe it clean with a cloth, reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to read the oil level.

The oil should sit between the “Min” and “Max” markers. If it’s low, top it up using the exact oil grade recommended in your owner’s manual.

2. Tyre pressure and tread is an overlooked fuel saver

Incorrect tyre pressure doesn’t just affect handling: it can also increase fuel consumption and reduce braking performance.

To check if your tyre pressure is correct, use a digital pressure gauge or a petrol station inflator to compare your tyre pressure with the manufacturer’s recommended PSI. This is usually found inside the driver’s door frame or the owner’s manual.

Inspect the tyre sidewalls for cracks or bulges, and check tread depth regularly. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, although many experts recommend replacing tyres at 3mm for improved wet-weather grip.

3. The coolant is the first defence against overheating

Coolant regulates engine temperature and helps prevent overheating during long drives or warm weather.

To check this, locate the coolant reservoir under the bonnet and ensure the fluid level sits between the minimum and maximum markers.

Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot. The system is pressurised and can cause serious burns.

4. Windscreen wipers and washers are a safety check most drivers ignore

Worn wiper blades can seriously reduce visibility during heavy rain and bad weather.

To check wear and tear, run your finger gently along the rubber blade to feel for cracks, tears, or hardened edges. Test the washers to ensure they spray correctly and clear the windscreen effectively.

If the blades smear or squeak, replacing them is usually a quick DIY job. You should also top up the screenwash reservoir regularly.

5. Checking your exterior lights could prevent a fine

Faulty lights are one of the easiest vehicle problems to miss because you rarely see them while driving.

To check your lights, turn on the ignition without starting the engine and walk around the vehicle checking headlights, indicators, brake lights, reversing lights, and hazard lights.

Ask someone to help confirm the brake lights are working properly if possible, or if you’re alone you can also reverse up to a reflective surface and check them in your rear-view mirror.

6. Battery terminals: stop starting problems before they start

Corroded battery terminals can prevent your car from starting reliably, particularly during colder months.

To make sure these aren’t corroded, inspect the battery terminals for white or greenish corrosion around the metal connections.

If corrosion is present, disconnect the black negative cable first, then the red positive cable. Clean the terminals carefully using a wire brush and a mixture of baking soda and water.
