Can you run a diesel car on vegetable oil?

It depends on the car and how the fuel system is set up.

Some older diesel engines with relatively simple mechanical fuel-injection systems can be more tolerant to vegetable oil. Certain older Mercedes and Volkswagen diesel engines, for example, have been successfully adapted to run on SVO.

Most modern diesel engines, however, use high-pressure fuel systems and sophisticated injectors designed to operate with fuel that meets specific road specifications. Vegetable oil has very different properties from diesel and is considerably more viscous, particularly when cold.

This can affect fuel delivery, spray patterns and combustion.

If you have a modern diesel, don’t treat straight vegetable oil as a drop-in replacement for diesel.

What’s wrong with vegetable oil?

One of the biggest problems is that vegetable oil is much more viscous than diesel, particularly at lower temperatures.

This can lead to:

• Hard starting, especially in cold weather
• Poor fuel atomisation, which can affect combustion
• Carbon and other deposits in the system
• Extra strain on the fuel pump and injectors
• Potential fuel-system and engine problems

Vegetable oil also has different fuel properties from diesel, including differences in volatility and combustion characteristics.

Can you convert a diesel to run on vegetable oil?

Yes, some diesel cars can be converted to run on SVO, but it isn’t as simple as changing the fuel.

A proper conversion typically uses a second tank, heated fuel lines and a heat exchanger to warm the oil before it reaches the engine. The car starts and stops on diesel, switching to heated vegetable oil once the engine is warm.

Whether a conversion is suitable depends on the engine and fuel system, and costs, maintenance and UK fuel-duty rules should also be considered.

What if I mix vegetable oil with diesel?

Mixing vegetable oil with diesel can reduce its thickness, but there’s no universal safe mixing ratio. The resulting fuel may not meet your vehicle’s fuel requirements and could cause problems, particularly in modern diesel cars.

What if I accidentally put vegetable oil in my diesel?

If you’ve added a substantial amount, don’t start the engine. Contact a garage or breakdown service to check whether the tank needs draining.

If you’ve already driven the car, look out for difficult starting, loss of power, excessive smoke or warning lights. If you notice any of these, stop the car safely and have the car checked.

What about alternatives?

HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil, and it’s a renewable diesel fuel and is generally much easier to use than straight vegetable oil – if your car is approved for it.

This type of oil is heavily processed and designed to have properties similar to conventional diesel. Check your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance before using it.

Is vegetable oil legal as a fuel in the UK?

Yes, but there are tax rules to follow. Vegetable oil used as road fuel is classed as a fuel substitute and can be subject to Fuel Duty.

If you use less than 2,500 litres a year, you generally don’t need to register for duty, but you must keep basic records of your use. If you use 2,500 litres or more, you must register with HMRC and account for the duty due.

So, using supermarket cooking oil in your car isn’t automatically tax-free. If you plan to use vegetable oil regularly as road fuel, check the latest HMRC rules first.
