Mat’s Car of the Day: I was lukewarm towards the Ford Kuga, but these deals make it look more appealing

Ford Kuga prices and deals
The Ford Kuga starts from just over £33,000 in its most basic trim level, rising to £42,000 for the range-topper. When you consider a Jaecoo 7 costs less than £30,000, and comes with more kit as standard, the Kuga looks rather expensive.
However, you can save an average of £6,746 on a new Kuga through Carwow, and the biggest savings are available on the ST-Line X hybrid model.
That car comes with a panoramic glass roof, a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a power tailgate.
This model usually costs just over £40,000, but through Carwow it can be yours for as little as £33,200. That’s around £500 more than a Jaecoo 7 hybrid with a similar level of standard kit, and there are a few reasons I’d consider paying the extra and opting for the Ford.
Three good things about the Ford Kuga
1. It’s good to drive
Ford knows how to make a bog-standard family car fun to drive, and the Kuga is proof. It may not be quite as poised as the old Focus hatchback, but the steering is accurate and precise, and it goes around corners very nicely indeed. It’s much better than the vague, wobbly Jaecoo.
2. Roomy back seats
One area where the Ford Kuga has always impressed is in the back seats. There’s plenty of legroom, loads of headroom and you can also slide and recline the chairs to expand the boot or stretch out on long journeys.
3. Clever door protectors
Here’s a feature I wish more cars had. When you open the Kuga’s doors, a little plastic strip pops out to protect the edge from walls and other cars. Perfect if you have clumsy kids chucking the door open without a care in the world.
Three annoying things about the Ford Kuga
1. The interior is dated
The Ford Kuga has been around for a long time, and it’s showing its age inside. It’s a sea of dark plastics, and it doesn’t feel as posh as a Jaecoo 7 or a Volkswagen Tiguan thanks to the lack of soft-touch materials.
2. Fiddly infotainment system
You get a large central touchscreen as standard in the Kuga, but it’s not the best to use. Some of the menus are a bit confusing, and I don’t like the way Ford moved the climate controls into the screen with a mid-life facelift. You used to get proper knobs.
3. The engines aren’t great
The Kuga doesn’t come with a great range of engines. The self-charging hybrid is a bit hesitant, and the PHEV’s electric range is nowhere near a match for the Chinese alternatives. It’ll do around 40 miles, whereas a Jaecoo 7 can do up to 56 miles.
