Mat’s Car of the Day: save over £5,500 on the excellent MG HS
Car changing is a big deal
The MG HS is cheap to start with, but you can get it even cheaper through Carwow. Mat Watson explains why you should add this car to your shortlist.
This is the MG HS, and I’ve always been hugely impressed with how much this car offers for the money. It’s way cheaper than something like a Volkswagen Tiguan, but you get loads of tech and a really good plug-in hybrid system.
Here are three reasons I think you should consider the MG HS, as well as some tips on how to get the best deal.
Three reasons you should buy an MG HS
1. It’s really roomy
There’s loads of space in the back of the MG HS, whether you’re looking to carry lanky teenagers, or fit a bulky rear-facing child seat. The 507-litre boot you get in the plug-in hybrid version is pretty impressive as well, beating PHEV versions of the Citroen C5 Aircross and Ford Kuga.
2. The plug-in hybrid is brilliant
The MG HS PHEV will do up to 75 miles on electric power alone, which is almost 20 miles more than a Jaecoo 7 can manage. It also makes this a really cost-effective company car, sitting in a lower BiK bracket than the Kia Sportage or Ford Kuga.
3. The interior is surprisingly plush
For such an affordable SUV, the MG HS has a pretty nice interior. It’s not quite as posh-feeling as a Volkswagen Tiguan, but you still get plenty of soft-touch materials and nicely-damped switchgear.
How to get the best deal on a new MG HS
The MG HS starts from just £26,500, which is already really cheap for a spacious SUV. However, I reckon the best deal to be had is on the top-spec plug-in hybrid version.
It usually costs £35,000, but you can save almost £5,700 on one through Carwow. That makes it over £5,000 cheaper than the equivalent Jaecoo 7, and you get loads of kit as standard.

Three annoying things about the MG HS
The MG HS isn’t perfect, and here are three things which annoyed me about it when I tested the car.
1. Fiddly interior controls
Lots of cars have climate control in the touchscreen these days, but the MG’s system is particularly annoying to use. If you’re using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you have to press a button, bring up a new menu, change whatever setting you want, then navigate back to the smartphone mirroring.
2. There’s no fast-charging for the PHEV
Some long-range PHEVs have fast-charging capabilities so you can top up quickly on the go, but the MG HS can only charge at 7kW using an AC home wallbox. That’s fine if you’re charging up overnight, but it’s less helpful when you’re away from home.
3. It’s not great to drive
Out on the road, the MG HS betrays its posh image with the way it drives. It’s not too bad, but a Volkswagen Tiguan is more comfortable over bumps and the Ford Kuga feels more agile through the corners.
