Electric car interest has jumped 23% as the Iran war pushes fuel prices higher, prompting more drivers to consider EVs.

Electric car enquiries have jumped 23%, according to the latest Carwow data, as rising fuel prices driven by the Iran conflict prompt more drivers to consider switching to EVs.

Petrol prices have risen by nearly 22p per litre (16%) to an average of 154.45p since the start of the conflict on 28 February, according to the latest RAC data. Diesel has climbed by 30% over the same period, reaching an average of 185.23p – a level last seen at the end of November 2022.

Prices have been driven higher by increased wholesale oil costs, fuelled by geopolitical tensions between Iran and the US and Israel, as well as disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.

Since the start of the Iran war, Carwow data shows electric car enquiries have climbed 23% month-on-month across new, used and leasing. Used EV enquiries are up 30% month-on-month, while used hybrid demand is up 6%.

By contrast, enquiries for petrol and diesel cars over the same period across new, used and leasing remained flat at -1% and 0% respectively.

The data suggests a shift in car-buying behaviour, with rising fuel prices leading more people to seriously consider electric cars.

Interest in cheap electric cars is up 24%, while our guide to the best Chinese electric cars has seen traffic rise 22%. Meanwhile, engagement with tools such as our EV charging map and charging cost calculator is up 32% and 30% respectively, suggesting prospective EV buyers are researching their local charging network

Most popular electric cars

The latest Carwow data also reveals the five most enquired-about electric cars in March:

Renault 5 – +38% compared with February

This funky electric car has standout styling inside and out, is great to drive, and comes with a heat pump as standard, plus up to 252 miles of range. However, rear storage is limited and it’s not the most practical choice due to its sheer size.

Vauxhall Frontera Electric – +42%

This practical SUV offers plenty of interior space, is good value for money, and is comfortable to drive. However, unlike the petrol version, there’s no seven-seat option for the electric model, and alternatives offer better range.

Tesla Model 3 – +1%

Sharp and tech-focused, this electric saloon has a strong range of up to 323 miles thanks to efficient motors, rapid acceleration, and impressive value. However, its minimalist interior won’t suit everyone, and alternatives offer more comfort.

BYD Seal – +76%

This Chinese saloon car is a fantastic alternative to the Tesla Model 3. It looks great from the outside and has a quirky but upmarket interior. The boot is on the small side, but the cabin is spacious and it’s really comfortable to drive.

Jaecoo E5 – +56%

Expect loads of cabin space and storage in this Chinese electric SUV, as well as pet-friendly upholstery and accessories, and a responsive infotainment system. Just don’t expect a thrilling drive.
