Starting school is a big milestone for children – but it can also mean a big change for the family car.

With the new school year approaching, Carwow surveyed 1,000 parents to find out how starting school affects their car-buying decisions and everyday motoring habits.

The new research reveals that 55% of UK parents change their car when their children reach school age. That’s as families look for more space, practicality and convenience.

Why are parents changing their cars?

For many families, the school run highlights just how much stuff comes with having school-age children.

Of the parents who changed their cars, 29% chose a larger vehicle, while 11% opted for an estate or hatchback. Another 8% prioritised additional safety features.

The biggest reason for upgrading was simple: space.

Almost two-thirds of parents (63%) who changed their car said they needed more room for holidays, weekend trips and family luggage. Meanwhile, 41% said school bags, lunch boxes and everyday essentials were taking up more space in the car.

For 36% of parents, making room for car seats and booster seats was another reason to upgrade.

Younger parents aged 18-24 said having enough room for a growing family was the biggest motivation for changing cars, with 67% giving this as their main reason.

The school run comes with hidden costs

Choosing a more practical car isn’t the only change families can expect when children start school.

The daily school run can add extra mileage to an already busy routine – and that can quickly add up.

Around 43% of journeys to and from primary school are made by car, according to the Department for Transport (DfT). This shows just how important the family vehicle remains for getting children to school.

For parents, the extra driving comes with financial consequences, with 41% saying higher fuel or charging costs are one of the biggest impacts of the school run.

And it’s not just fuel or charging bills that can increase.

More than a quarter of parents (28%) say they need to clean their car more frequently, while also experiencing increased wear and tear, including scratches and scuffed bumpers.

Parking can also be an unexpected expense. Nearly one in five parents (19%) have received a parking ticket while dropping off or collecting their children.

From family car to school-run workhorse

For many parents, starting school changes the role their car plays.

A vehicle that once seemed perfectly practical for everyday journeys can suddenly feel cramped when it’s carrying school bags, sports equipment, lunch boxes, car seats and everything else a growing family needs.

The Carwow research suggests that parents aren’t necessarily looking for a flashier car, but rather looking for one that makes family life easier.

More boot space, flexible seating and useful safety features can all become more important once the school run becomes part of the daily routine.

For parents preparing for the new school year, the school run could be the moment they realise their current car no longer fits their family’s needs – literally and financially.
